I saw the news report about this and found it shocking. I can't even fathom being that cold! .
"A bitter and deadly blast of arctic air is continuing to charge its way across the U.S., dropping wind chills to as low as negative 70 degrees across the northern Plains, and 30 below zero in the Midwest."

These temps will prove deadly for anyone who is homeless and does not seek shelter and will cause problems for some people, even though they have homes to live in. I saw a news clip of a woman's sink where water was actually freezing immediately after coming out of the faucet. I hope everyone here on SF who is dealing with the brutal cold will be able to stay warm. We're good here so far. Minus 9 wind chills tonight.

Last night we had about 476 in shelters. About 16 homeless were found in the cold and transported to a hospital. One of those did pass from exposure. The number of beds in the has been increased today in an effort to get more people help, not only the homeless but also those that don't have heat in their homes. Even the libraries are staying open as warming stations overnight.

It's great the the libraries are staying open to be used as warming stations. I imagine many more places will need to remain open to house all the people don't have heat in their homes as well as the homeless.

Yes, that I think it is such a good idea, many of the people are struggling to afford food, cost of housing and then electricity and gas. They have the option of going to a shelter or warming station if needed to be able to keep in good financial shape.

I once stopped at Thule Air Base. It was around -25 degrees. We didn’t stay outside very long. Even the mucus in your nose freezes. Someone said to keep an eye out for polar bears, so I did, but didn’t see any.

When I lived in Ottawa it was -35C a few times. I didn't have a car and had to walk to the bus stop to get to work. One of my co-workers kindly agreed to drive me. He wouldn't take any money for gas so every Monday I gave him a batch of homemade peanut butter cookies.

My city is shut down - roads closed. My son, who works for Hydro One was told all employees will have to work on Christmas Day if there are widespread power outages.

Stay safe. Cook your turkey before the power goes out.

Like you @OneEyedDiva, I am having a hard time just thinking of those brutal temperatures that people are facing! ... just can't imagine.

When the RCAF flew resupply flights to Canadian Forces Station ALERT, the alternative landing was at Thule Greenland for the C 130 food runs. ALERT was/is the Five Eyes listening post that used to monitor the USSR radio comms during the cold war. Now it still does that, but most of the installation at ALERT is now automated with only about 60 CF members on site. The feed from the antenna array goes to the main operating facility in Ottawa now. ALERT was/is a hardship posting of 6 months duration. JimB.

Like you, One-Eyed Diva, we are "enjoying" 9 degrees, "feels like" -9. Sounds downright balmy, compared to those other places! (But I'm staying indoors anyway.)

It's been over 40 years since our area had such a brutal drop in temperatures. At least the sun came out today...for the first time this week....and we will finally come out of the single digit temperatures.

In our area, many "Warming centers" were opened by churches. Wind chill was like 6 degrees. Last night I stepped out at 8 pm, felt great at 30 degrees!

Roads are slushy, tonight supposed to be 38° now comes the long melt.
