With the elections coming up a vote for civility

An online Christian friend just shared this article on another forums which, like this one, has a no politics rule. One difference there is that you can have private messages on any topic to which you can limit participation. There is an anything goes private discussion thread called The Big Side Discussion Thread (fifth iteration) and recently a Theology of Politics private discussion was begun. Not sure if this platform would support such a thing?

After reading this I texted my sister who is out there regarding politics, vaccines and conspiracies but still my only sister and had a very nice exchange.

I found this on Wikipedia: "Civility may denote orderly behaviour and politeness. Historically, civility also meant training in the humanities," and that,"our ability to act with civility is connected with our ability to understand our own emotions." Know yourself!
 

Civility is important. What worries me is that I've heard, especially lately, people (IRL and on TV, the Internet, etc.) literally say that they don't trust civility, that they prefer those who "tell it like it is" or "just say what everybody is thinking." They actually admire that sh*t.
 
We have so many important issues to decide on this election. It would be nice to discuss the issues, but there will be disagreements on how to handle these challenges. Then people start following the party line propaganda that their party represents. There is no convincing others when their mind is made up. It becomes an issue that takes on personal choices and that is where we don't want to budge. Agreeing to disagree is great, but it rarely does anything as far as actually sharing information. The information is channeled into one's personal opinion and defended. I don't think there is a way to be civil when the stakes are so high this time. Best to keep our voting choices to ourselves, IMO.

That worries me too. It shows how deep the rift has become. Too many are not fully invested in the common good.
 
As hinted earlier, civility in politics is pretty much an impossibility these days. And I'm sad to say that what civility I've seen may well be a smokescreen. It's pretty sad.....
