WNBA Player Brittney Griner detained in Russia

I saw that. Very sad. It's unfortunate that she chose to bring vaping pen(s) containing cannabis/hashish oil into Russia.

A drug-sniffing dog indicated narcotics in her luggage, and when the bag was X-rayed, “so-called ‘vapes’ ” were discovered “with a specific odor,” according to Interfax, which cited the Russian Federal Customs Service.
“The expert found that the liquid is a narcotic drug cannabis oil (hashish oil),” Interfax said.

Probably not a good idea to travel with those kinds of drugs. (That's the best I can do with understatement right now.)

Yikes. Bad timing. I doubt she's leaving anytime soon based on other Americans imprisoned there. An American teacher Marc Fogel has been detained in Russia since last summer for similar charges and faces 20 years ...same airport, maybe the same drug sniffing dog.

If a person is going to travel to another country, they need to follow that nations rules. Just because the U.S. is increasingly relaxing its rules on Marijuana products doesn't mean that other nations are becoming equally "liberal". This person needs to look into the mirror to find someone to blame.
With the increasing Russian/Western World tensions, No U.S. people should be thinking of traveling to Russia.

She was detained before the invasion started. She was traveling there to play basketball for a team owned by one of Putin's oligarch buddies. As an athlete under contract with an oligarch, she probably would've been released the same day had the invasion not been imminent but she had no way of knowing that it was.

I only saw the summary of news featuring this, so was wondering why she was detained. After reading the posts, now I know. I think it's crazy to bring drugs into another country, even if they are considered legal in some states in the U.S. I doubt that much can be done about it at this point.

I agree with you on this. I think we all research what is allowed within certain countries prior to packing. It is still very unfortunate.

It is. Cannot imagine what her family and friends are going through. I've read about several others 'detained' in Russia since you posted this. Even pre-invasion, families rarely hear from loved ones imprisoned there.

I often wonder why some people do items clearly against the place they are traveling and then seem surprised when reality hits.
Many times people want sympathy or outrage but fail to mention until the fine print that their own actions caused the issue.

I do not think celebrity or $$ should buy a get out of jail free card......
