Woman Teaching Her Kids To Panhandle

Today, as I parked in a market lot, I saw the usual group of 3 panhandlers holding up their sign - "Hard Times," "Please Help," "Anything Helps," "God Bless" etc.
After shopping, I returned to my car & I see a woman & a child, around 5 yrs old approach the group.
At first, I thought they were going to give them food or money.
NO, the woman dropped off the child, who joined the other 3, took the sign from them & held it up while waving to people with her other hand.
More money is collected when a child is involved.

It got better. The woman got into a $70,000.00 Mercedes SUV that was parked next to me & drove away.
I wonder how she paid for the vehicle..........Could there be that many gullible people??

every time it seems to be a Mercedes.. When I go into the larger towns a few miles from here, I see these female beggars, and over the years I've watched as they've returned to a big expensive Mercedes..as the driver..

In Spain the beggars drug the children, and then it looks like the children are asleep in the parents arms while they sit out begging for money in the baking sun all day long...:mad:
 
I never give money but if I think they might need help I bring something out to them. Bread, peanut butter, canned tuna, pasta, bag of apples. It they are truly in need they appreciate it. For the ones I think are just trying to take advantage or approach me in any way, I go in the store and ask for the police to be called to check it out.

this has played out time and time again in many areas... our local TV on the street/ scam alert reporter joined a group and had a sign gathered about $200 before someone recognized him.
he gave all money collected to a shelter but showed how easy it was and learned the different angles ... a child ... a dog etc

I once babysat for a woman who was teaching her children how to shoplift. Talk about disgusting. I quit. I should have done more, but I was young at the time.
 
You just have to pay attention, they are really in need of help. I once came across a man outside of my neighborhood Walmart. It was the dead of winter, cold and wet. He was tucked up under an overhang, no sign, no little container for money. He was just trying to find a place to keep warm and dry.

When I came out I brought him a big deli sandwich and a hot chocolate. You could see the tears in his eyes, his thank you was real. These are the people we should watch for.
 
Hate to say it but I am not surprised. This is why we have to be careful of all of our donations. Just like the panhandlers people come up with all kinds of ideas to take advantage of others, even when we are trying to help others. I feel I am way better off selling my own things. Then I can take the money and donate to trustworthy sources or buy things to donate to animal rescues, food, beds, collars. I do this with my city animal services. I have adopted my pets from them, I know they do the best they can to keep the animals safe and loved.

Your local church is also a good place for donations. There are many of the church family that need food, clothing, cleaning products, even light bulbs and batteries are needed. The same things that all people need in everyday life. If you do not fill comfortable with that, look at your congretation, you can see what they need, buy it and deliver it to them directly. If you see that don't have winter coats for their children they also need socks, underwear, school supplies, blankets, sheets, toiletries.

Also check with your local schools, they are very much aware of the children that attend their school and what type of help these kids need. There are so many ways to help we have have to decide what we are comfortable that the people in need are the ones that our donations help. Not every charity is a good charity.

Many are illegal immigrants. This was the case just recently when a group of men were hanging around a local supermarket. It turned out, they had entered the country illegally and were not entitled to any benefits. They were handed over to the appropriate authorities.
 
I live in Texas, I see many people here that might or might not be illegal immigrants. These men do travel and shop as a group, often they are dirty and sweaty from a day of hard labor that americans will not do. They are buying groceries as a group and as far as I know share living arrangements. Makes no difference to me, they are here working hard, trying to build a life, take care of their families even if the family is in another country. They have manners, say please and thank you, hold doors open for women and the elderly. There but for the grace of God go I.

My ancestors came here in the 1700's to build a better life. I don't judge anyone that is willing to work hard to build a life for themselves and their families.

The men I have just referred to were begging, not looking for work.

Thanks for the clarification. I have never encountered that situation. I would say that would be on the rare side in my area. They might go to food banks or soup kitchens until they found some sort of work. They know at anytime they could be sent back so try to limit any behavior that could be a problem. Most are good hard working people.
 
There was this guy I used to give money to because he was actually selling something; oranges, pay whatever you want. I asked him where he got the oranges and he said an old lady lets him pick them from her 2 trees. He told me where she lived and I checked it out. It was true. The lady said she and her husband were working in their yard one morning and a homeless guy stopped and asked if he could have a few oranges. Eventually she'd leave a box of oranges by the gate for him to eat and sell.

A panhandling woman I gave money to sang for it. She had a pretty decent voice, too. A few gas stations sometimes have the homeless window-cleaning guys. I paid one of them for a window-cleaning, and went back later to give him a bag of nice, clean rags and a few pairs of socks (for his feet), mainly because he did all the windows plus the mirrors, and he wasn't pushy. He also had a great sense of humor, so this guy was a window-cleaning stand-up comic. Well worth the 5 bucks.

They all move on eventually, but it's kind of cool when they do a little something to earn your donation.
 
I never give any money to these losers. Mostly, it's young folks who should be working but seem to like to beg during the day and then sit and watch TV all night or stare at their phones. Not a "penny" from me! Send them to Ukraine and give them a gun; I say!

I went to school and worked hard all my life until I retire. What's stopping them? No excuses! I had my battles do and won them. It's time they did something for society instead of waiting for free handouts.

There is one more thing they do all night: Laugh at the fools who paid for their phones.
 
I am reminded of a story a friend told me many years ago. He was on his way to his usual trip to McDonalds for breakfast. Passed a panhandler on the way. I think the sign said "Hungry, please give money" So, he bought a second breakfast and brought it to the guy. When he gave it to him, the guy said "What the F is this? " and threw it down on the ground. My friend said he never gave a handout again

I thought I'd seen everything a couple of years ago when a guy was standing on corner holding a sign that said "Just give me money- don't ask questions!"

However- locals seem to never fail to outdo themselves... months ago, a guy was clearly enjoying the reactions he was getting- people leaning out car windows as if they couldn't believe it- his sign said "anything will help, SO I CAN GET REALLY HIGH!"
