A woman who said she needed to bring her 'support' dog on the plane with was told no unless it was in a crate. She refused to put in a crate and abandoned a french bulldog puppy leaving it in a stroller. Police called after dog found in parking area. Dog has a chip but owner not responding to calls.

A local humane society will care for dog until investigation complete.

But it has emerged that a number of people have been passing off emotional support dogs as service dogs. Doing so has enabled them to take the dogs on planes where, in some cases, they have become overwhelmed by the cabin environment, causing them to behave badly.

This is a example of the entitlement mentality out there....
this is also why some people do not buy a claim of even REAL service animal ...because so many people will claim that to think they can get away with it....
It shows how "important" he dog was to her to abandon at airport. wish there was a solid way to make sure she could not get dog back or own any animals.

I get that which is why their dog needs to be certified as a support dog . They should have a doctor's note, especially the support dogs. Service dogs are well trained. A support dog could be any dog declared a support dog by the owner.

Just about every dog is an "emotional support dog", isn't it? I mean, your boss has torn you a new a$$hole, your co-workers are idiots, the traffic home is terrible, your car is making that knocking noise again, you don't have enough in the checking account this week to pay both the rent AND the charge card bill......you come through your door and the dog greets you with, "Oh Glory Be! The Master is home! You're a God, you are! Let me just dance around your shins and exult in the magnitude that is your perfect being once again!"

Now isn't that emotionally uplifting?

But.....it doesn't entitle you to take 'Ol Leg Humper everywhere, though.....

Obviously that lady's dog was only a "support" until it became inconvenient. Then it became "disposable".

I just looked up a picture of a bulldog puppy and found out the price! this litle sweetie is going for $10,000!
I'll take it!

What surprises me is the number of dogs I see now at the airport. I even saw a couple dogs on our cruise ship! It costs us a small fortune for a dog sitter but that’s the price of having a pet. I can’t imagine just abandoning one of ours dogs ever. Clearly, this woman did no research prior to arriving at the airport. People can be so dumb.

Stupid woman needs prosecution for animal cruelty as well as being plain stupid. That poor dog.

I want him! Dogs are so beautiful but puppies totally irresistible.
We are not worthy to have these loving creatures as our friends. Of course most people are decent, few as stupid as that woman.

We do not even go out more than a very few hours without arranging a friend to come give our dog a 'rest break' in the garden. Boarding is vital if going away. Yes it costs, vaccinations must be up to date, insurance too. It's called being responsible.

Can't wait to hear her excuse.

Since this happened in the US I think she will likely be penalized in some way for animal abandonment, etc.

I'm not in favor of more laws/regulations, but his is one area that is being abused far too often. It makes it difficult for those who have real service dogs & really do need them. These dogs should be certified, wear a certification ID & the person the dog was intended for also have an ID. Sure would solve a lot of problems.

This is from ADA website https://www.ada.gov/topics/service-animals/

About Service Animals ~ Service animals are: Dogs
Any breed and any size of dog
Trained to perform a task directly related to a person's disability

Service animals are not: Required to be certified or go through a professional training program
Required to wear a vest or other ID that indicates they're a service dog
Emotional support or comfort dogs, because providing emotional support
or comfort is not a task related to a person's disability

If the dog's mere presence provides comfort, it is not a service animal under the ADA. But if the dog is trained to perform a task
related to a person's disability, it is a service animal under the ADA. For example, if the dog has been trained to sense that an anxiety attack is about to happen and take a specific action to help avoid the attack or lessen its impact, the dog is a service animal.

(Happened to our family in late 90s) Didn't abandoned my two wee dogs BUT after all the preparations, the multiple vaccinations required for both dogs. The multiple phone calls to the Airline to set all the passengers and pets who'd be travelling and the few items all prepackaged according to rules and regulations, everything was CONFIRMED...in plenty of time in advance.

The costs of the specific crates our doggies required plus tickets and confirmation letters taken with us on day of departure. Our wee bird, our oldest girl, a longhaired chihuahua and our youngest girl, a Pomeranian which belonged to our Munchkins, were accepted no problems on short flight from small city to main international airport.

However, when we got to international airport, that's when everything fell apart. Even though we had all the proofs from Airline, papers from vet, confirmation and all was paid for. The airline flatly refused...

We had to abandon our bird, it was taken by a worker who's husband had an aviary business. We had to pay extra transport tickets for our two doggies, booked on KLM for the next day. We said our goodbyes and it was the last time we saw them alive. According to their rules as discussed with airport manager, the airline was at fault but nothing could be done unless we could wait two weeks. The latter wasn't possible!

So, we faced extra expenses that we hadn't planned for and a long haul flight with all of us crying our eyes out, missing our pets.

Once arrived at destination, things didn't get any better with airline. We had secured our cargo, declared in forms every items in each boxes. Wasn't good enough... Everything was broken into, lots disappeared. It was chaos.

We never saw the wee birdie, never found the person to contact. Our two doggie girls were in quarantine only two weeks. Due to the extra vaccinations, two healthy dogs of 4 and 3 years old died of over vaccinations for rabies. We were told by a clerk at the quarantine privately as the owners still expected us to pay the £600+ monthly fees for the entire 6 months.

The clerk thankfully just quit and found another job with a good vet in town. Nevertheless, we lost our precious pooches. It took two years to resolve the fiasco, but there isn't a day when we remember what happened.

I still hear from time to time that even though the quarantine system has improved of poor wee pets who lose their lives or their owners. Sorry, to post this here. Just needed to get it off chest.

Maybe the person in question had no choice. As sometimes the best plans go completely pearshape...

So sorry @Supernatural you & your family went through this.

Our friends, who imported German Shepherds, had a few problems with some airlines & ended up only flying Delta. I know the hoops they had to jump through & one of them always flew with the dogs. As long as the dogs had paperwork from the vet in Germany, there was no quarantine period in the states when they came in.

It's ridiculously expensive to take the dogs on the plane..we've done it a couple of times... but in recent years we chose to drive for 3 days .. and sail.. which would only be a 3 hour flight usually.. but it was so much more comfortable for the dogs.. and less stressful for us wondering how they were doing in the hold...
