Dingbat (noun) - 1) a typographical device other than a letter or number (such as an asterisk) used to signal divisions in text. 2) an eccentric or empty-headed person.

Archie Bunker often referred to his wife as a dingbat.

It’s also a name for a certain type of apartment building (usually 2 or three floors) in S. California. Parking is the ground floor. They don’t do too well in earthquakes if the support columns are weak. The second floor will suddenly become the ground floor.
