Word of the Day - Sophomoric

I knew it was immature and childish, but I never thought of it as intellectually pretentious. At best, I assumed a sophomoric person was trying to seem smart, but never actually getting there. Would that qualify as intellectually pretentious?

the etymology of sophomoric seems to be oxymoronic or at least qualifies both synonymously...

"Sophomores get a bad rap. A lot of people seem to think they're foolish (no matter what they do), when they themselves know they're pretty wise. The history of the words sophomore and sophomoric (which developed from sophomore) proves that it has always been tough to be a sophomore. Those words probably come from a combination of the Greek terms sophos (which means "wise") and mōros (which means "foolish")."

I read soporific. I never heard of sophomoric before, probably because we don't refer to university students as sophomores where I come from. They are just called undergrads.

Sophomoric doesn't roll off the tongue all that easily.
