Word of the Day - Synod

Synod (noun) - a local or provincial assembly of bishops and other church officials meeting to resolve questions of discipline or administration.

The Synod of Bishops is an international deliberative and advisory body for the Catholic Church.

You might think that the word synod is an acronym. It certainly looks like one. It's actual origin is of the Greek word synodos, meaning assembly. The word is a noun. it's an assembly of bishops and other ecclesiastics.

In my denomination we have four levels of governance - local at congregational level is the Church Council, district level is called the Presbytery, at state level we have Synod and the national level is the Assembly. All decisions are made consensus.

Every level consists of both lay and ordained members and women are fully represented. I am currently representing my congregation at the Presbytery.

I graduated from a Lutheran university and at the time I was there it was required take a religion course. The one I attended was an exploration of the Lutheran synods. It was interesting to learn their various histories and beliefs. Many of the Synods of those days have merged, been given different names, or changed in major ways.

My old university has eliminated the religion requirement since my day and I think their Synod affiliation has even changed.
