I'm guessing that many people would be opposed. I've been asking AI to provide some thread topics. They're quite similar to ones I see posted on most forums. On the plus side, there might be more threads to post in. On the negative side, people might be less invested if they didn't create them.

Well of course they are going to be worse. That’s supposed to be something WE do as a group. There probably are some AI memberships already. Members who have threads just like you and me.

They’d be different threads because there wouldn’t be ego attached. Ego gets us completely emotional ; angry, fear, ful sad or humorous. Ego can rule us so we might not ask the questions or answer the questions the same way AI can.

After a while we won’t know who’s real and who isn’t. To me, I find it spooky. Who trains AI. Evenly AI will be doing all of this. We will be obsolete. I don’t know the answer to the question.

Aren't forums about people though and, like this forum, often people who have something in common, like age or interests? One of the things I like about this forum is the different lives and opinions we all have. I don't think I would be interested in reading what an AI has to say about the ups and downs of life and getting older. 🤷‍♀️

The real problem with some threads is that some of the titles are a bit vague. Titles should be clear and specific. Sometimes you have to visit a thread to find out what the heck it's about. Grrr

This vagueness happens on other forums as well. Probably because most of us are not professional writers or subeditors or whatever. Would AI create better titles? 🤷‍♂️

I asked an AI for some thread titles for mature people.
  • "Overcoming the Empty Nest Syndrome: Coping Strategies and Support"
  • "Managing Chronic Health Conditions: Experiences, Tips, and Resources"
  • "Estate Planning 101: Wills, Trusts, and Ensuring Your Legacy"
  • "Elder Care: Balancing Your Needs with Your Loved One’s"
  • "Alternative Travel Destinations: Off the Beaten Path for the Discerning Traveler"
  • "Late-Life Career Changes: Taking the Leap and Thriving"
  • "Grey Divorce: Navigating Separation in Your Golden Years"
  • "Grandparenting in the Digital Age: Staying Connected Across Generations"
  • "Retirement Planning: Strategies for a Comfortable and Fulfilling Future"
  • "The Sandwich Generation: Caring for Aging Parents and Adult Children Simultaneously
Then I asked for some more specific titles.
  • "The Science Behind Hobbies: Exploring the Benefits of Engaging in Personal Passions"
  • "Unconventional Book Club: Discussing Lesser-Known Literary Gems"
  • "Volunteerism and Giving Back: Making a Difference in Your Community"
  • "Pursuing Lifelong Learning: Online Courses, Workshops, and Self-Teaching"
  • "Tech Talk: Keeping Up with the Latest Gadgets and Innovations"
  • "Creative Writing: Sharing and Critiquing Original Works"
  • "The Ethics of Consumerism: Supporting Sustainable and Ethical Brands"
  • "Movie Buffs: Analyzing Classic and Contemporary Films"
  • "Home Improvement Projects: DIY Tips and Tricks"
  • "Cultural Exchange: Sharing Traditions, Customs, and Recipes"

The AI suggested titles sound more like magazine or newspaper content/articles. Forums are for human interaction. If I want to talk with an inanimate object, might as well get some fresh air and talk to my garden shed. No contest... I would 100% prefer real people on forums, even if they bicker and argue and even if their titles are vague.

It would be worse because if you get an AI to create thread titles, then there is a good chance that you will need AI to respond to human questions about the title. AI is clever, but heartless.

AI created threads are already in the mix, and I can sense many of them. They often appear to be asking knowledgable questions but in an ignorant way. It provides an example of what I would call 'artificial arrogance'.

Humans have characteristics and idiosyncrasies that makes them unique individuals.

English is my second language, and most know it. I used to make apologies for my grammar; I often have words in the wrong places. But most said that it didn't bother them because it was who I am.

In retirement, I put together two weekly newsletters; one for our cycling club and another for our local amateur radio club. All the contributing reports by other people are left unedited (even though I am the editor). I do this because it preserves the characteristics of the people we already know.

We bring character to the forums. We bring what is in our hearts at the time, and we, the reader, can relate to it.

which is not how it should be, lord knows @Matrix has asked on a few occasions that people make the topic of their thread clear in the title. he's actually removed some on a few occasions that are vague...

I think Quora creates a lot of AI questioning... they're designed to stir the populace up.. and it always works..

@caramel Did AI make up this thread title?

"Would forums be better or worse if AI created thread topics?" :)

Just kidding, but A great question!. Maybe there will be new forums that AI will create the topics, and some people will like going there. It is so complicated right now, with LLM's AI gathering data from everywhere they can. There is a bunch of copyright laws being broken, and false information that the AI gives. But some people believe in its future to assist mankind, so I think ( even though there is a "Stop AI NOW" movement that has started) it will keep developing.

When someone asks a certain kind of question here that needs information or facts we often use a search engine to find us the answers. AI is doing the same thing. Probably in a more democratic way, because it uses several different information places to form its answer. So it is going to be with us. But I would not be interested in AI thread titles. They will bait you into needing them. :)

A lot of the "feeb threads" ("How Many Angels Dance on the Head of Your Pin?") seem to come from some AI or cribbed from some other social media source (woman's magazine?) already.

Not sure how that would work. I would think the spam filter would catch automated accounts.

For me personally, I like the possibility of some threads that are not about ME ME ME. Having chatted with a bunch of chatbots, it's something that I like about chatting with them. It can still replicate ego, taking credit for things or being competitive, but if I ask it not to, it's a nice possibility that I won't have to deal with that.

AI = Artificial Ignorance.
Ignorance? AI is evolving. AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), which equates to human level intelligence and beyond, may be just around the corner. As AI expands it will most likely gradually displace human labor … until what? Until humanity becomes entirely dependent on its AI leaders, labor, and masters?? Perhaps we flesh and blood creatures are just the current step in a much grander progress of evolution?
