Would like to go on a cruise?

Hollydolly posted a thread about a possible health threat on a cruise ship. Some of the comments were like, "who goes on cruises anymore?" Personally, I think those monster ships are Las Vegas hotels, which just happen to float. But, what do you think? Are you a 'cruiser'? :)
I used to own a PT Cruiser. I prefer planes over boats.

LOL...there's no comparison between some boats and any plane ...:D

This was our boat...12 feet wide, 70 feet long... .... top speed 4 knots ..

Nope. When I was younger I went on a Carnaval cruise and it was ok. I actually met a lady that worked on the Carnaval Cruises later in life and she was part of the crew years ago. She said that even the crew would be partying whenever they could and that any of the lifeboat training and safety procedures that she learned along with others, she told me she and others would not even be sober enough to help passengers. Wow, that was an eyeopener! Anyways, I don't think it is like that anymore, at least I would hope. But I just would not go anymore because I am afraid of catching some disease.

Yes, but then I spent 35 years in the cruise industry. It allowed me to sail just about everywhere, either for business or vacation.
The Med, Northern Europe, Asia, Alaska, the Caribbean. We sailed to the Med and Canada/New England last year and we always spend extra days before/after. Our time in Montreal and Quebec City prior to the cruise were fantastic. Barcelona prior and Rome afterward were great as well. They are some of my best travel memories.

We just sailed to the Caribbean last month and our time in Miami before the cruise with my BIL and old friends was amazing. We knew going in that the Caribbean itinerary wasn't great but the cuisine and evening entertainment aboard the ship were great. We are looking at the Med again for this fall. We love the "walking cities" in Europe.

We typically only go on Seabourn or Holland America. The ships are small or medium-sized. No huge ships for me. Perhaps the best part is that we always meet new friends. We met our best friends aboard a Seabourn cruise to Asia in 2019. We've since visited them in CA and sailed to Alaska with them. We met another couple aboard our Caribbean cruise last month and plan on sailing with them aboard Seabourn in 2025.

The bad rap that cruise ships get for being unhealthy is unfortunate. Yes, during Covid the media really played up how dangerous they were, but then any enclosed place was. I've sailed on cruise ships since the mid-80's and I once caught a case of Norovirus. Other than that, not evening a cold.

I doubt if I'm the right personality for cruising (introvert, inhibited, prefer a book to going to see entertainment, almost OCD about food, habits, daily schedule, etc), but I have signed up for my first cruise (late in the summer). This is part of my goal this year to remember you-only-live-once and to do things before some horrid health issue develops and keeps me from traveling.

The cruise will be going to a couple Turkish ports and to several Greek Islands. I'm not sure of all the methods to visit islands in the Mediterranean but I suppose a cruise ship is a relatively efficient way to visit several places. I'll be going to Crete (tho it seems to have a different name), Rhodes, Mykonos, Santorini (tho I'd never heard of it and after watching a YouTube of someone riding a bus there I plan to take the cable car (I am deathly afraid of edge-of-mountain driving).

We'll be in a different port each day, so I'm thinking I'll mostly use the ship for eating and sleeping.

I really think you will love that itinerary.

Try to spend at least a full day and evening in Athens. It is a historic city with a beautiful museum, the Acropolis and a district called the Plaka, where there are great restaurants where you can dine outside. It is also great for shopping, if you like that.

Oia in Santorini is an idyllic little, walkable town with the blue and white buildings and ocean views that Greece is so known for. It is also a great place for outdoor dining. I've yet to go to Mykonos, but I understand it is also beautiful.

Kusadasi is where Ephesus is located. Try to take a guided tour to get the full narrative and history. Istanbul is one of our favorite cities. Be sure to visit the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia if nothing else. They are marvels of architecture.

We are looking at pretty much the same itinerary in October. Enjoy!

I have only been on a few short cruises. I looked for the smallest ships, old was ok too. I enjoyed every minute onboard and off. I am not bothered by other people. It is a choice to just tune them out or choose to enjoy their company. I am without a travel partner, so I have been looking into senior singles cruises to Alaska this spring.
Fun thing to do when we ate at tables of new people was to choose one chapter of my life and be only that. A missionary, cabinet maker, farmer, cowboy, veterinary assistant, pilot, bull rider, prison counselor and potter among others. Kind of fun to start off a story with "Well, I was in prison a lot in the early 2000s, I even spent some time in the same prison as OJ but we never met!"
A cruise is about new places and new people. I had to laugh at myself the first time I met Caucasian people who did not speak English. Yes, my world is kind of small.

I have never been on a cruise ship. I used to think it would be nice but as a single person I don't fancy sharing my sleeping quarters with a person I don't know. That's what put me off in the first place and the price of a single cabin would be quite expensive. Think I'll stay at home, thank you very much.

That looks like a wonderful cruise, HoneyNut.
If you are interested in ancient history you can take a day trip to Ephesus from Kusadasi.
It is an amazing experience.
