Would You Buy Jewelry From A Pawn Shop?

I would be reluctant to buy jewelry in a pawn shop or even in a prestigious store if I didn’t know what I was doing. The fact that it had belonged to someone else wouldn’t bother me at all.

“Let us not be too particular; it is better to have old secondhand diamonds than none at all.” - Mark Twain

Never thought about it one way or another. But I've never bought anything from a pawn shop.

Just wondering, why would you not? How about a thrift shop or consignment store? Is it only pawn shops?

Over the years, I've purchased a couple of watches from Pawn shops.
Just ones that caught my eye.
Never really thought about the previous owner, it's just a watch.

I do not buy jewelry ....... I bought my first [& only] ex-wife an engagement ring 50+ years ago .... but that's it. Don't believe in it really.

There is a local jewerly store that advertises used jems & used Rolex watches ........ and in the commercials they never state the price [overall] .... they just say ... this one for this monthly payment & that one for another monthly payment, etc.

IMO, something like jewerly & Rolexes if one dosen't have the money in their pocket ......... they can't afford it.

It is no wonder folks get into financial trouble .

Yes, I have. Good deals sometimes.
I bought a squash blossom necklace for $100.
Sometimes gem shows are better. Dealers need to pay booth fees and costs so you can get some good deals.
I have gotten some beautiful stones at the shows.

You've gotta know what you are doing.
Jewelry drops like a rock, once sold.
High end pawn shops that deal in jewelry, specifically diamonds, can get you a good deal.

Whenever you buy a diamond, know that the appraised value is for insurance purposes only and is a quoted inflated amount to convince you that you‘re getting a great deal.

Insurance agents then charge a rate based on that. When something goes wrong, they replace the item directly through a wholesale seller who charges them a much lower price.

I've never bought anything at a pawn shop but have gotten some lovely jewelry at yard sales and church fairs. People don't always know the value of what they're selling.

I would if it had something I wanted bad enough. As Nathan mentioned the mark-up can be high. With some you can haggle a bit for a better price.

On my first anniversary to my first husband, I got a beautiful marquise diamond engagement ring. (He wanted to wait until our anniversary to get it "to make sure the marriage was going to last" before investing that much money! Ha ha! 💩 on you, you old skin flint...) Anyways, after the divorce 12 years later, I went back to the same jeweler to see if I could trade the ring in and the jeweler said it was "scrap". Didn't even want to bargain. Diamonds as an investment is highly overrated.

So, my second husband and I went to a pawn shop for a wedding ring set which I am still wearing 38 years later.

Ok, I don't buy jewelry but I have bought things in a pawn shop. They were things like used DVDs and some stereo equipment. Right now I own a dual track JVC tape player; yes, I still listen to cassettes that I have recorded myself over the years. Also, bought my present guitar in a pawn shop. Can't afford a $4,000 Gibson so my $150 Epiphone from a pawn shop will have to do.

When the stories were new/current ..... about the little kids & adults that were having their arms cut off , sometimes for just to much diamond dust in their pockets ......... That is when I said never again would i buy one. They were known as "Blood Diamonds"

Yeah, yeah I know some say it never happened ......... I read about it in Nat/Geo and there were photos of the kids, & others. I believe it took place & might still be taking place.

When it comes to greed ..... I put nothing past the human .

My memory's not the best these days but I don't think I've ever been in a pawn shop. I've lived here all of my life and couldn't tell you where there is one nearby without looking in the phone book or asking around?

I bought a couple of rifles at a pawn shop. I did have to fill out the background check, then wait 3 days to get my rifles. They were brand new. I paid about 1/4 the new price.

To me jewelry is personal. I had a few rings when I was in my teens but all were eventually stolen. I have bought tools at flea markets but never bought anything from a pawnshop because you buy at "as is" conditions and I prefer warranties.
