Would you ever consider going back to work?

I retired six years ago, traveled quite a bit, then was offered 1st Deputy Clerk job in my town. I took it, worked for a year, but was not paid enough for all I did for the Town Clerk. I quit, and realized I wanted to volunteer for many organizations, and not have to clock in and out.
It's rewarding on many levels. I'm happy.

I've been retired for 31 years and many thoughts have passed through my mind but returning to work as compared to being home with family has never been one of them.

As the years have passed, only one of our 4 kids hasn't retired and as they're all nearby my wife and I enjoy their company. Also the enjoyment provided by the flock of grand and great grands that they have provided.

Some of you know that I'm something of a workaholic, as in paid work. Well now I have called time on that, reason being, the lady wants me in her life for the time that we still have.

Her younger sister passed away, quite suddenly and most unexpectedly at the end of April. The death has hit her very hard, she has reached out to me and that's all she needs to do. Work gave me a stimulus and something that most take for granted. At work there were about a dozen twenty somethings that I got on with very well, it's the nearest thing that I have ever been to being a grandfather. But a new life beckons and I do have the pleasure of regular text messages from those youngsters.

Now domestic chores make a morning pass quickly and I can cook. Yesterday my lady had her nails done ready for a jolly that we are going to on Sunday. While she was out I cooked a cottage pie. Her look of delight was a picture when I served up.

I salute you for your swift, gracious response to your wife's request.

May you enjoy many healthy years together as you embark on this new leg of your life adventures.

I retired in Dec of 2003. Took 3 weeks off and found a job creating custom kitchens. Eight months later called my old boss and got a job as a contractor related to telecommunications fiber optic cable.
2023 and I am still working as a fiber optic engineer.
I'm 75 and still work full time. Besides which we have a retail gift store in a vacation resort.
For me, retirement was a myth. The gold watch, golf clubs and retirement in Florida was just a way for the company to say goodbye and a good place with warm weather to enjoy the rest of your life.

The issue is that you either are or are not still relevant.
Everyone needs to decide for themselves.

Y'mean like getting up in the morning, waiting at the bus stop, getting drenched in the rain, then the bus's wheel hitting the deep puddle in the gutter sending a tidal wave of dirty water all over me. Then having to clock on and having some horrible sod barking orders at me, and not being able to go to the lavatory every 10 minutes because I pee a lot. Not being able to watch TV or log onto SF....... do you think that I'm a bloody lunatic? 😊

That sort of becomes a Nightmares night sweat, doesn't it?
I sort of feel I work harder retired than I did while holding a day job.
Why ruin my retirement, adjust the bucket list is a good thought.
The count down is worth the wait is how I see it.

I work a bit from home and quite enjoy it. Keeps me engaged in an industry I worked in for nearly 50 years, brings in extra money, and my schedule is my own. DH & I set this up with a couple of our clients 7 years ago. It allowed us to close our warehouse, reduce our staff to ourselves, semi retire, but keep our small business going on a smaller scale.

He and I have different specialties, and both parts are necessary for us to do this. He wants to be mostly finished this year. I'd be happy to stay with it longer but agreed to wind it down to almost zero this year.
Update: DH & I have decided to continue working through at least Dec. 2024, God willing and the creek don't rise.

My thoughts are will you buy tickets so I can entertain you. Don't expect much if you won't by tickets. Haha
Place you unpurchased tickets on the seats and please leave.
