Would you relocate for financial reasons?

My property taxes are frozen per Texas law for those over 65, but I've spent a lot on repairs and maintenance. This house is bigger than I need, but if I downsized, the price of the smaller home wouldn't be enough less than what I could get for mine, so it wouldn't be worth making the change. The other alternative would be an apartment, but at the rent might become unmanageable at the rate prices are increasing. So, I stay where I am.
It was similar when we moved to Oklahoma. My budget was the sale of the big house in Texas. It covered the purchase but not the pre-move in changes. Taxes and utilities are considerably lower. Roughly 2/3 of the house, 1/3 of the property and 1/3 of utilities taxes.

I rather obsessively shop real estate. There are some pretty darn cheap places to live out there. Anyone game to uproot in retirement and start over?
I would, maybe one last time. Both of my parents were military as well as myself. From my birth till I turned 55, I never lived anywhere more than 4 years. I'm used to it.

The older I get the less it matters where I live.

I stay here because it’s familiar and comfortable.

“Adapt or perish, now as ever, is nature's inexorable imperative.” - H. G. Wells
I feel the same way. Im comfortable and I know where everything is. Also Ive lived in this house for over 50 years and Ive got the stuff to prove it. Just the thought of dealing with my hoard makes me twitchy. :D

For me anyplace where I can not look out the window and see palm trees is too far north. It is 50 years since I last drove in snow. When I leave it will be feet first.
That's cool, but I'm just the opposite. I love the snow and cold, going for an early morning walk in minus degree weather. 10 to 15 below is comfortable for my 1 mile walks early in the morning. It's real peaceful and quiet.

I'd have to move out of the USA to find anyplace cheaper and livable I think. I did a bunch of research before retiring at the age of 53 in 2006, to see if it was doable.

- Bought a very small house (750sqft, 2bdrm 1bath) built in 1945 that was gutted and refurbished inside and out, top to bottom, for $50K. The guy had refurbished the house for his sister who was placed in a care facility before she could move in. So I snagged it cheap.
- Don't pay property taxes at all because of county stipulated age exemption
- Pay zero state taxes on income. Military retirement and social security are exempt.
- Super Walmart here, so lower prices on stuff ... mostly
- Population of about 29K with a military post just outside of town and a bypass road that completely loops around the city. Can use military retirement benefits on post and enjoy a nice drive out to do it. Population enough to enjoy most lines of commerce, trades and health care.
- 25 miles to the Florida state line, so sugary white Gulf of Mexico beaches are a day trip.
- Mild winters and HOT summers. I'm okay with that.

The ONLY drawback to where I live is the trashy rat neighbors across the street who have learned to keep their distance ... and stay off my lawn.

"Would you relocate for financial reasons?"

Yes. I've been watching this possibility unfold for a few years. There are good possibilities- however, it's a matter of the societal changes one is willing to make or accept. I can adapt easily in many ways, but everyone has lines they won't cross at some point. My ability to adapt is good.

The older I get the more it matters where I live. I want to die on the ocean (Atlantic) where I lived for so many years of my life. Yesterday I found just the place but it is really far away and do not know how to get there. Small town but it has everything I need---even a higher end yarn shop. I was amazed! Food delivery, medical facilities, fire and rescue, restaurants. A pharmancy.

I am not sure I want to pack up everything and do it. I am very comfortable in this place. BuT I am sure this is my very last chance to do this. Gonna call around the area tomorrow,

We moved for financial reaons
Our expected combined social security will only be $2650 a mo. (today's dollars)
Our #1 expense was our $1600 a month mortgage paid off when I turn 80 yrs old. Very Nice 2 story but in snow country.
Now reduced down to a $175 a month Property Tax Payment.
Imagine your housing only costing $175 a month!!!

Free endless spring water saving $100 a month
Power was $225. About $50 a month averaged out now (Propane) Had PG&E, the costliest power company in the U.S
More months a year of sun = more free transportation via e-bikes, e-car being
Grow much of our food. Luv being off-grid

I plan to work very p/t forever but want that $ saved to go to our disabled son. We'll Live off of SS only

When my husband dies, I will sell this off-grid house paying more out for a lower standard of living in a Mobile Home Park
Buy a Mobile Home downtown where everything is walk/e-Bike able-church, health food store, community center, cafe, gas/mart, library.
This tiny town has everything, even medical offices but our retiree health plan only covers dentist/dr. about 35 min away.
A Public Bus comes to our town every Wednesday going to the town where our medical/dental is so we could take that

Don't lower your standards, why live like a shadow person with personal disembowed pain.
Why sell your home? Just accept another Dumb skat with some $$$'s into the thing. Lol
Don't turn away a good person that has some personality and resources + Interesting plans. ... :coffee: ...

I did. Retired from California with a fixed teacher retirement. Left California the same month I retired and sold my house. Can’t afford that state. I relocated to New Mexico for 4 years and last year, I moved to Missouri.

I wouldn't relocate for any reason. This is the last place I'm going to live.
I, on the other hand, would relocate for any reason. I would love to get out of this state. I've mentioned elsewhere in this forum that I intended to move to a different state back in 2023, but I got sidelined by medical and tax bills that I'm still struggling to pay off.

Someday, maybe! 🤞
