Y2K !!!

That was just another example of media hype. The media made a big deal out of a non-event, just like they're doing with....hmmm, let me think of an example...Greta Thunberg. Other examples? Bird flu, ebola, Russian collusion. I didn't fall for it then and I'm not falling for it now.

Ya know, if the date on your computer was Nov. 23, 1998, and it was able to switch years to 1999, then it was no big deal to go to the year 2000.

Not true, Fuzzybuddy. I'm a retired computer programmer, so I know something about this subject.

In computers, one character (letter or a one-digit number) is referred to as a "byte." The programs written at that time were told to expect a date to be a two-byte field. Nobody had thought ahead enough to call the year 1998 or 1999; we all thought the first "19" was an unnecessary waste of space. (Which it was until we got to the end of the century.)

So, if a program relied on one date being later than another date, for instance, it would be comparing only those last two digits. Instead of comparing 1999 with 1998, it was comparing 99 with 98. So far, so good. But what happens when the year changes to 2000 and the "20" part of it is missing? Aha! We are comparing 99 to 00. Which number is greater? Exactly!

This does not mean the end of the world, as some easily panicked people thought, but it could have meant colossal disturbances in computer programs that compared dates with each other. The programs had to be corrected, with the year changed to a 4-byte field, which took care of the problem.

LMAO...The wife and I were reminiscing about that this morning.
We have always stayed prepared, stocked up... just a fact of life around here.
Remembered it was 27 degrees out when we jumped on the bike and rode to the local watering hole for the last ride of the century.
Funny as hell we had several there asking us about getting our last ride in ever due to the pending doom...
And pointed out we were ready for it... Was riding our 69 XLCH Harley.... Magneto Fired, No battery Kick start only...
