Yesterday's Blood Work Results

Received results of medical tests from my annual visit to my cardiologist. Everything is normal in the CBC and thyroid department. The only "abnormal" results were:

HDL - my results 30 - normal range (more than 60)
triglycerides - my results 180 - normal (less than 150)
glucose - my results 119 - normal (70 - 100)
A/G ratio - my results 1.0 - normal (1.1 - 2.5)

This was FASTING for 18 hours! I think I may be a pre-diabetic - not surprising - it runs in both sides of my family.

My mom was diabetic, all her brothers and her father. Her great-aunt (father's sister) was so bad she had to have her legs amputated (but this was long before modern health care). Mom had trouble regulating her sugar - if she didn't take her med, her sugar was in the 200-300 range. If she took it, it knocked it so low it couldn't be measured by the test strips and it caused her to pass out.

I did lose 5 pounds since I was there last year, not much, but in the right direction. My BMI is 36.4. That's what eating like a sumo wrestler and sitting in front of the computer most days will do.

Looks like your cholesterol is high, too. High triglycerides aren't good. That HDL is the "good " cholesterol, which you do want to keep up there and that's low. Was your LDL high? My doctor would be having quite a talk with me about diet and exercise if mine looked like that.

This is the lipid report (not counting the HDL which I already posted) and they were in the "normal" range:

Total cholesterol - 166 (normal is less then 200)
LDL - 94 (normal is less than 100)

I think triglycerides are from more of a high carb die than high fat.

I gave upon with most cardiologist when in 2002 they gave me 2 years to live... I moved to a cabin in Northern Alaska and haven't looked back. That said I am fighting with that HDL number ( mine is 35 ). The Rx my doc gave me for it Simvastatin 40mg never got a chance to see if it worked because after a few days on it my legs would wake me up with pain worse than a muscle pull. Hope you are having better luck than I because that low a number means plack is ripe to build up in the arteries.

Oh those good old statins will do it every time. No wonder too, so many are going into dementia as the big push for this statin class of drugs is just horrid.

Cholesterol is not the big issue, we need good cholesterol and in another thread we were talking that a 240 total was a good standard. Too low will affect the brain and hence the memory.

Debodun

Blood sugar can be controlled by cutting way way back on carbs/sugars and take it seriously. It's one's life and diabetes is no game. America is a population of carb eating addicts. I've cut way back and I'm not diabetic and don't want to be...no sugars either...a little fruit, but I want to keep healthy.

Veggies, protein, good fats and WATER....keep that insulin down.

I don't know what I'd eat if it weren't for cereal, bread, crackers and pasta. I've heard that eating 5 to 7 servings of fruit and veggies a day is good. A day!!!! More like a month for me.

If you have genetics for diabetes, the above foods are a guarantee for you.

There are MANY MANY foods to eat.

Forget the 5-7 servings of veggies daily.

I have NOT brought breads into my house for about 10 + yrs....good old great healthy Romaine lettuce wraps for a sandwich type foods.

No wonder so much diabetes, carbs galore.

And I have NOT had cereals in many many years nor pastas. It can be done...Very sad to eat all this dead foods.

I almost think people like to live with diabetes!!!!! So so many don't help themselves.

A friend who has a family too of diabetics and so does she, went on a great

Chicken and greens and no carbs and lots of water and slimmed down so much and was doing great with the diabetic issue. Don't see her much so don't know about how she is now. I know she lived at the doctors...and every G.D. drug they gave her.

I bough 20 Cortland apples at a local orchard a month ago. Probably had 6 so far. The delicata squash are sitting on the back porch. I also bought some strange looking grapes. They've been in the fridge a week now, untouched. I buy fruits and veggies but never seem to whip up much enthusiasm to eat them.

Well, then you are your worst enemy.

Everything in moderation, veggies, some fruits. quality meats and good fats, but cut out of the dead foods is my take on this diabetic epidemic. Making drug companies very rich.

I buy 3 organic honeycrisp apples at a time and eat 1/2 about every other day.

Same with organic grapes, don't buy lots of pounds as they will go to waste.

Are you not close to supermarkets?

I guess how you define "close". I live withing walking distance of several convenience stores, but they are far from offering healthy food, even by my standards. The nearest supermarket is about 5 miles (10 round trip), so I go once a week on a day that I deliver meals-on-wheels since I have to pass by there on my route.

"I almost think people like to live with diabetes!!!!! So so many don't help themselves."

That's an asinine thing to say.....Someone LIKES living with a disease? !

Some folks just cannot adapt to the 'cardboard' diet. People eat most often by their taste-buds. IMO it's human nature to do so .

Most diseases are genetic, bad genes ?...ya get sick. Can we hold some of them off?....I really don't think so.

I totally disagree with you...Most of us end up being what we eat or what eats us@!!!!!

We are the only ones with control over our disease destiny. Too many people are just plain lazy and so grab a box or a bag and eat away.

Maybe some with family diabetes may "wake up" if faced with an amputation. It does happen.

BULLSHIT!!...we control nothing....It's all genetic.

Oh my gosh, what a defeatist comment.

Not defeatist at all, realist .

Why do you think DNA tracking has become so important lately? It is an attempt to track family history. Not looking for ones attachment to royalty , but to track medical history.

I don't care what kind of supplements one takes, or how much they exercise....if a disease carrying gene is in that persons body, and it activates,..... that person is going to fall ill to that disease. Much of it depends on a persons immune system. If it is strong, and remains so....that person will likely live a longer/healthier life.

There are almost always exceptions , but this or that pill, or 10 extra push-ups is not going to guarantee a healthy life.

Like I have said before.....casino life, cigar smoking, whiskey drinking George Burns. Out lived health nut , Jack LaLanne

Regardless of the DNA or not --- there is so MUCH we can do to control, manage and in some cases reverse the issues our DNA gives us.

To feed the issues with more toxic foods and other poisons is in our CONTROL.

My mother's side of the family all had arthritis and YES I live with it at 80 and it's advanced but I do all I can to keep going and read, read, read and DO what so many offer us to help manage this condition.

I see your point & agree to a large degree but. People are not going to eat what they do not like to eat. That's just IMO human nature, if their taste buds just reject whatever ?? then they are not going to eat it, no matter how healthy it is for them.
You hinted to them being fat & lazy, irresponsible etc. And it's just not always the case.

Oh there are SO MANY choices.
