Yet Another Employment Question

Okay, some weeks ago I interviewed at BestBuy for stock work. To be honest I don't know how to turn on the TV in the living room...the remote has like twenty buttons. But reading a planogram and putting stuff where it needs to go? Yeah my cats could do that. So totally non-techy I went for the interview.

The child who interviewed me is younger than my older boy. But he was so enthusiastic and so happy to get me on his team. I had to keep a straight face. Then a few days later I got another call that the store manager wanted a second interview. Once again the joyous welcome, maybe they smoke together during lunch? What's wrong with you guys?

That was the place where I failed the drug test until they found out I had a real live prescription. But a week or two later I got a message on the machine " This is so and so from Best Buy, I wanted to talk to you about your job offer". To me that sounded like " We checked your credit and you now have no job offer". But she kept leaving messages.

I've had so many bitter experiences with big corporate. I just figured she had to tell me formally that I didn't have a job. One of the banks did that. But after hearing yet another message. I called her, she wants me to bring in ID and she'll give me a starting schedule. Do they do a credit check???????

One website says you should be proactive and ask them. If they do then you need to try to explain why your credit is lacking and that you really really really want to make it better...really! I dunno, should I just go tomorrow and not rustle up any waves? Or at least just ask? I don't know...thoughts?

Oh goodness, fingers crossed for you fureverywhere! But I have no possible fool-proof suggestions on how to handle this. I think if it were me, I'd have my 'story' ready, but I wouldn't volunteer the information but if they did mention it, don't hem and haw but explain the situation as it arose and what's transpired since. And practise it several times (if you're like me, write out a reply to lock it into your head) beforehand. Good luck and hope it works out.

I agree

I don't understand. You said she wants you to come in with ID and she will give you a starting schedule. That sounds to me like you're hired. If someone had told me that, I would show up with ID, ready to work. And keep my mouth except to say "Thanks."

I agree with Guitarist and Pinky, just keep a positive attitude and go there with confidence. I don't know if it's true, but I read online that they don't do credit checks at Best Buy. If you're jut going to stock the merchandise, I wouldn't think you'd have to know too much technical stuff, but I may be wrong. The interviewer is a young man, not a child, best to keep that in mind. :) Anyhoo, good luck Fur, hope you get the position, sounds like it would be a great job for you!

I saw that they don't do credit checks too, so I'll see what happens. I'm going to have to be somewhere like three months before I believe I really have a job. Interesting side note...I don't know how many people took civil service tests back in the day. There used to be a newspaper that would print out all the testing schedules. I took it and passed to be a corrections officer. You know I couldn't pass that physical now. But in the 70's and 80's you could just sign up and appear for any test. Now they charge twenty five bucks a pop just to take a test sheeesh, times change.

Ditto. Congrats on the job. I did stocking at KMart for a few years. It was very physical but fun too. Good luck.

Fur, I hope everything works out for you. Anxious to hear the outcome. In some states it's illegal to ask certain questions, like your age because they could discriminate against you. When I was looking for work later in life on one interview I was asked what year did I graduate high school. Dah! Sneaky??

But despite all...it's still depressing. Why did I bother with college at all? Or so a prof says I write good, major in English. A major or master's in social work would be more job openings. I'm begging for jobs I'm totally over-qualified for. Something from Queen Latifah's autobiography...she is an incredible woman.

Her Mom worked a bunch of jobs and for awhile they had to live in the Newark projects. But her Mom said this is not our life. This is a temporary thing. You will not get "project mentality"...we are going to do better here. That's what I have to hold on to...my frickin' credit report isn't who I am. I can do so much more...
