You probably have a fob and I don't!

That little gizmo that allows you open and lock your car doors from a distance. As I don't drive that much anymore and don't need a new vehicle it is boo hoo for me and yahoo for you...

Yes.. my new 2015 has a FOB.. I still am getting used to it. Weird to not have to take out a key or remote to unlock doors and to start the engine. The car is definately smarter than I am.. lol!!

Hmmm, well, I wanted to be clutching a fob in one hand and an iPad in the other with a bottle of gin by my side when they lower me down, but I guess two out three ain't bad...:sentimental:

A friend's newer pickup has a fob but still starts with a key. He is down to only one key and said a replacement key costs $80 because it has some kind of micro chip embedded.:eek:mg1:

That's the beauty of a FOB.. you don't need to clutch it in your hand... you keep it in your pocket.. It never has to leave your pocket. unless you want to remote start your car. In which case.. you take it out an push a button.

FOB... Frequency operated base or button

I don't use a key to start my car.. Foot on the brake.. and I push a button. As long as the FOB is in the car.. ie... in my purse or pocket... it starts.

I saw the push button cars on TV. Didn't know you had to have the fob in the car. The button is still on the car, not on the fob, right?

My 2000 pick-up key has a chip..I believe it is more than $80 for the new key and it has to be programed at a dealer..

Actually I kind of hope so, because I'm afraid it might be just another one of those things that will malfunction and then cost a fortune to fix.

I know... and that is why I took the lifetime warranty out on both my 2014 Jeep and the 2015. It covers anything that can break.

I can`t remember when I last had a new car that didn`t have a fob. Maybe 1991 Suburban didn`t have one but 1994 one did? Seems like even the `91 one did though. Anyway,I can`t think of a car that I`ve either owned or that came through our body shop over the past 25 years or so that didn`t have one.

I think that what you are refering to is what used to be called "Remote entry" or Remote door locks.. You still needed the key to start the car. I don't recall hearing the term FOB before.

I have plastic card about the size of a credit card but much
thicker, with a battery in it, I very rarely have to press it to
open doors, except when I am putting my shopping in the back.
When I approach the car with the card in my pocket, the driver's
door unlocks, I press a button on the dash and start or stop the
engine and when I leave the car and walk away, the door locks
on its own.

Mike.

That's how my FOB works

When I used to buy advertising item for our shop (key rings, pains etc.) the salesman always called the "key rings" key fobs. That was the first I had ever heard the word. They weren`t like what we are referring to-just little plastic thingies with our shop name, address and phone # imprinted on them. This was back in 1977.

Same with watch fobs... a chain that held a pocket watch and suits had "fob pockets" to hold the watch.

Mine doesn't start the car, but opens the doors when I push a button on it -- REALLY handy if you have a bunch of grocery bags! I wish I could get one for the front door of my house.:)

I can still open the locked car doors with a key if I need to. The remote device also sets the alarm for me.

I just aquired a Chevy Sonic with a FOB...
Greatest thing I ever had.. Love the idea to start the car and warm it up in the winter before getting in it from the house.. Love the idea to push a button and lock or unlock all the doors and back hatch at once..
The FOB is also the key.. Push a button on the top and out pops the key.. Push the button and the key is inserted back into the little FOB.......
The car came with 2 FOBS and I was told that another one is very very expensive.. Don't lose it...
