You win a trip to a major city in the U.S. but would you go?

I did win a trip to Los Angeles once....to attend a Comedy Award Show. I went, had a fine time, but would not do it again

Definitely and hopefully it would be NYC. I love cruising out of Manhattan Cruise Terminal. So I would add on a cruise to have a back-to-back vacation.

Not a big fan of big cities, I used to live in L.A. county, and visiting L.A. is exciting, but I hate the traffic. Seattle or Boston would be interesting, as long as someone else is driving.

I have nothing against New York City, and I've been there a couple times in my life .. lots to see and do, but when I think of traveling somewhere these days, I think R & R, and I want to go where I can dress down and be totally comfortable and relaxed.

New York City is a dress up destination .... and I sure don't have the wardrobe for that anymore.
And 'scheduled' stuff doesn't interest me now.

It's funny how people experience different realities.

I've been to nice restaurants in NY, gone the theater, art museums, cathedrals, concerts... and have never gotten "dressed up," unless business casual is considered dressed up. I spend most of my time these days in sweatpants and flannel shirts or t-shirts when it's warmer, so compared to how I normally dress, business casual would be dressed up, but it's not like wearing a suit.

This is what I consider "business casual", would you agree?

I've visited several cities in the US and enjoyed them all. Each has its own attraction.
If I was given a free trip, I would try to get the timing right since my city of choice
would be NYC. The Broadway shows, Metropolitan Opera, what new exhibits at the Museum of Art. That should keep me happy for a long while. I've see all the
other sights.

I;d go... where do I sign ? :D
You can have my ticket. My wife and I have been to the US many times. Then, about twenty years ago an incident occurred that had us heading home, never to return.

A car thief had pulled a driver out from his car, jumped in and drove off. The victim did no more than pull a hand gun out from his pocket or holster, took aim and shot the thief. It didn't kill him, only winged him, but it did caused him to lose control and go under the wheels of of an eighteen wheeler truck, that killed him.

The event itself I didn't see, but I couldn't help but get caught up in the ensuing crowd that gathered. It was there that some follow told me the run of events. I didn't know what to say, i just said, "really," or maybe I said: "incredible." The fellow said, "you are British!" suddenly all the shooting was forgotten, here was a British guy!

What spooked me was, the thief being shot, was seen as street justice. In the seventy-six years that I have lived in the UK I have never seen a gun, except when we went on a couple of weeks leave to the Spanish Costas where the police all carry sidearms.
That incident had us talking on the plane home, we didn't actually say it but it has been a given that although we loved America and Americans, their gun culture just wasn't worth the risk.

HC... that must have been quite a shocking thing to witness for you..
However I am used to being around guns.. as you say the Spanish police where I have my second home routinely carry guns as do all the security guys at Casinos' etc.. . I also have a British Shotgun and Firearm Permit, and own my own guns.. so I know how to shoot..not that I would be shooting anyone if I went to the States..

I have had an invite from 2 members of this Forum and their familes to come and visit in the USA later this year at their invitation . One of whom is a member of law enforcement.. so hopefully I will get there, and I'm sure all will be well..

I've been to NYC several times, so wouldn't choose it. Also, have been to Las Vegas, Boston several times, all over Florida, the Carolinas.
I have no desire to go to California at all.
I'm not sure where I might go if I won a trip, perhaps back to Maine. I love that state!
I love Maine too.

I live in a suburb near enough to a big city so though when I was younger, I might have liked to have gone, now I wouldn't. Europe or Canada would be different. I'd go there.

I would choose the huge metropolitan city of Durango Colorado (in the summertime). I would enjoy my week or two there over any major city and come back home refreshed instead of a nervous wreck.

No way. I live in the metro Houston area outside the city limits in Harris County. Never go into Houston and have no desire to.

Too much too much for me. Same for exotic touristy places. My idea of a dream trip would be back to lightly populated central Nebraska, thank you very much. A

I live in a similar situation here in Phoenix. Barrett Jackson is happening now, and then the golf tournament (around 275,000 will be there that Saturday) and the Super Bowl the same week, and then Spring Training. Traffic will be a mess for the next three month around my area. I'll take the peace and quiet vacation .

The only places I've stayed in for any length of time are Rochester, Minnesota and Newport, Rhode Island, both of which I enjoyed and would happily go back again - if someone else was paying!
The only major city I've visited was Boston. It was interesting and often amusing to hear the American version of history .
My daughter likes Chicago and has been there a number of times to talk at international conferences. My only experience of Chicago, was a stop over at O'Hare airport on the way to Minneapolis.

Would go in a heartbeat.

Miss traveling and have enjoyed many large cities.

Understand why many wouldn't choose to visit a large city,
things have changed with those that used to be considered relatively 'safe'.

Me, I refuse to just sit around letting unknown 'fears' run my life.

No, I wouldn't want to go to NYC. Never really enjoyed it the few times I did go.
I went to the World's Fair in 1964. I went on a school trip which included taking the boat around Manhatten Island, seeing St Patrick's Cathedral.
I never liked the feeling of NYC. It always felt depersonalized and unfamiliar.

Now Boston was nice. I only visited the waterfront which I guess is the best part.
