Your Idea of a Dream Escape

These iPhone photos I took were my dream escape for a few days recently; this is where I had planned and wanted to be: sitting on my hotel balcony, looking out over the pristine turquoise waters of Lake Brienz every morning as I ate breakfast, contemplating where to explore each day.

Interestingly, after I returned home, I read on the BBC News website and then other websites that Lake Brienz was one of the lakes where the Swiss military dumped munitions between 1916 and 1965. Environmentalists in the 1960s convinced the military and government that it probably wasn’t the best idea, especially when it was discovered that some of the munitions were still live!

So there I was, several days later, back home and reading the news, realising I had been looking out over a lake that could potentially be a bomb waiting to go off! A bit melodramatic perhaps, but these thoughts do cross one’s mind.

And then there was the memory of driving back to the hotel late one evening in a thunderstorm after spending the day at Grindelwald. I was caught in torrential rain, watching as the lightning illuminated the outline of the mountains. Then driving along the lake shore as the lightning lit up the surface of the turquoise lake, creating an unforgettable scene. But not a sense of danger, at least not until later reading the BBC News:
Switzerland offers prize money to get munition out of lakes

Yes, many places, and one accompanied with a song. Sitting on Solsbury Hill, an Iron Age hill fort looking over the City of Bath, Somerset, England. Whether that be at night looking over the city lights, or on a sunny afternoon, or in the early morning with the mist covering the city. Either way, I don't mind.

And the accompanying song? Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabrial. Witten after he left Genisis and moved near to the City of Bath. He received a "spiritual awakening" when he walked up Solsbury Hill, then he wrote a song.
