Your Monthly Food Expenditures

My husband keeps a spreadsheet of all expenses. In May we spent $700 for food. There are just the two of us and we had 3 days of company so I spent more than usual for those days. We rarely go out to dinner, maybe once per month, and never go to a coffee shop. I never do without anything I want, just buy what’s on sale.

I looked back at the 2020 summary and it averaged out at $700 a month.

Do you know what you spend per month?

Two of us and $350 to $400 month. And there is poultry, beef, pork or fish on the table every day for dinner.

I spend roughly an hour each Thursday tracking the weekly specials and load them onto Flipp to price match at two stores that give points for future purchases. I coupon but not for junk, mostly for household or cleaning supplies. My freezer is always well stocked. And there is some convenience food in there too, I got fish last week on a coupon/sale for $3 and frozen waffle fries for 49 cents.

I can honestly say that I cringe at times when I see some at the checkout with little in the way of good nutritious food but with a large bill.

yep the ball park figure seems to be around £400 if living alone... however I don't buy paper goods and toiletries because I have had a stash of them since last year with the exception of paper towels . Some months I spend less.. because I batch freeze food which means for the next month I only need half as much

It's just ms gamboolgal and I.
Thus far this year we are averaging $726.73 per month.
For 2021 it was right at $600 per month for Groceries
We budget $1,200 per month for Groceries - so we have alot of Contingency in the Budget

To be honest, we also spend just about the same for Eating Out each month. However, I will say, that ms gamboolgals cooking is much better than most restaurants we go to.
But we both enjoy going out to eat. Guess it's almost like "dating"... ha !

My covid really cut down on the grocery budget the past month - it lowered it to zero and gave me the chance to empty out the fridge, freezer, and cabinets. Normally I only order food once a month.

Prior to that I was spending about $200 a month, food only (not dog food, which raises it to closer to $250) It's really hard to compare food costs in the USA since they vary a lot depending on location.

Like the original poster, I also keep an expense spreadsheet. I also made one for the grocery list, to make ordering food for delivery easier.

I'm about due to order again and am preparing myself for sticker shock - I know the bill is going to be a whopper!

When we first got married I kept a note of expenses, but I soon got fed up with that. I suppose since then I've just worked on the principle that if we have enough for basics and a bit left for treats, that's fine. I don't differentiate between food and non-food shopping. It all has to be bought and that is spread between major stores and small independent shops. I suppose it comes to the equivalent of around $450 a month.

This doesn't count wine and cider which I buy by the case from various vineyards and wine merchants. Lets say another $50 a month.

I used to keep a record of all expenditures but not anymore. Food is a necessity and not an optional expenditure.
I used to know to the penny how much I'd spent. When my daughter was little and I was rasing her by myself without any maintenance from her father.. I had so little money to spend, I had to count the cost of everything in my head as I put it in the basket.. I'd have a finite amount, £10 for example.. and I used to worry I'd get to the checkout and I might have added it up wrong and would be embarrassed to have to put something back
