Your worst fashion fail?

When I was in high school the big fashion fad was hip huggers and the thinnest girls would wear short tops with them to expose their midriffs. It was not considered a slutty look at all. It was like mini-skirts - everyone was wearing them, there was very little else to buy in the stores for teens, so all the girls wore them. Our schools did have rules, however, about belly buttons showing so girls would get tops that stopped right at the top of the hip huggers.

Girls would get sent home to change if they broke that rule, or if no one could pick them up, they'd be ordered to wear their P.E. top all day even if it smelled and needed washing.

I had only one top that showed my midrif and I only wore it on the weekend, once, with hip huggers. Other times I'd wear it with regular pants. I'm sure I was just doing it because it was normal and I wanted to attract a boyfriend. We all wanted boyfriends - a steady date to go to the dances with.

I've since come to think as high school dances as cruel things. Clubs are better. Let the kids get involved in hobbies in clubs and make friends of any gender. Much healthier than all the pressure and insecurity that goes into a dance.

During this same era, we had girls rejecting the mini-skirt trend and wearing long skirts to school. Those were against the rules until some parents complained. Long skirts were deemed a safety hazard. Seriously. Parents carried on and the school began to allow them. Long skirts came into being because of hippies and the Flower Children, but also because New York Designers saw hippies wearing long dresses and said, "Yeah, we can copy that!" Soon designers had long dresses and minis in their collections.

The late 60s and early 70s were a time of extremes in fashion, but that made it fun too.

Interesting post @VintageBetter and reminded me of the mini jumpers I had. They were just long enough to sit above the waistline of a pair of jeans, I loved them.

I also loved the 70's :)

I had been flying for United for almost three years when we had a flight from New York down to Miami and do a turnaround back to Dulles in D.C. with only a 20 minute down time. I was the First Officer at that time and I asked the Captain if I could run inside the terminal in Miami and grab a Cuban sandwich and I would be right back. He said to go ahead, but hustle it up.

I didn’t bother to put my coat on and you would have thought I forget to put my pants on. The Captain told me plain and simple that this is not a bottom feeder airline. When you leave the flight deck while flying for United always make sure you have your coat on. After that one time, I never forgot again.

Platform shoes weren't particularly comfortable.

those are hideous lol...

but I had nice platform shoes and boots.. 3 inch soles and 4 inch heels . I wore them everywhere. I would even run in them... I wore them all through my pregnancy, and my doctor told me not to, that I would make it difficult to give birth by pushing my pelvis into an awkward position.... but with the know-it-all attitude of a 20 year old.. I ignored him...and I had a very painful 3 day labour.. 😫😩

Well, I turned my beloved "elephant bell" super-bell-bottomed jeans from college into maternity jeans (because I knew I wasn't ever going to be 99 pounds again).

They were dynamite with tiny brass bells and embroidery and tiny mirrors and I wore them onto base one day with a loud gauzy top. I was quite the fashion show.....

I was noticed by the Commanding Officer who commented on how "colorful" I was and asked my name.

Later that day, my husband got hauled into the C.O.'s office and told in "colorful" terms, "I DON'T EVER WANT TO SEE YOUR WIFE ON MY BASE DRESSED LIKE SOME @%$!@&*% GYPSY HIPPY!!! YOU TELL HER TO WEAR SOME PROPER MATERNITY CLOTHES OR GO BACK TO CALIFORNIA OR SOME OTHER $%@*&#$ PLACE WHERE THEY DRESS LIKE THAT!"

Needless to say, I wore "proper" maternity clothes on base after that!

Wow! That Commanding Officer sounds like a piece of work. Your jeans sound wonderful! In the 70's I had a whole collection of embroidered jeans and loved them. :)

Yep! Things like that spread like wildfire on social media. 🤭 You could have been viral. Oh, and I hope someone bought the poor dude a belt and instructed him on how they're used.
I wonder if I could have been sued? Would have been a bit mean of me anyway as he did look very embarrassed. He was fortunate to be wearing boxer shorts so, could have been worse!

I can't afford to be fashionable. I wear what I can afford that's also comfortable. I don't worry much about it. I still have several dresses that probably still fit since they all were too big before. I have lots of clothes in a few smaller sizes if and when I take more weight off.

I like them! Not for walking in, just for show :ROFLMAO:

If I put platform shoes on now, I'd put my Back out... instantly...

When my DD was about 13 or so, she was doing a modern history course at school, and was learning about fashion through the ages. She came home and asked if I knew about Platform shoes.. not only did I know about them I said but I still have the pair I got married in.. and promptly got them out of the loft to show her..

she fell down laughing.. crying buckets of tears laughing at them.. didn't stop for 10 minutes... :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
Of course since then like all fashions Platforms have made a resurgence and she's very au fait with them now , not that she's ever worn them.. but when she was 13.. she'd never seen anything like it...

I attended my first day in Junior High School (7th-8th grade) wearing the same type and style of clothes I wore on my last day of secondary school (5th-6th grade).

Some of the other 7th-grade girls made fun of me. I was mortified. When I got home from school my mother took pity on me and took me back to the mall, where she returned all the school clothes she'd bought the month before, and we started from scratch. She even invited her friend and the friend's daughter, who had started Jr High the year before.

I was happy with my new look, but it was still an uphill climb to get past that first impression.

Wow! You walked on them? I had lots of platform shoes but, the only ones I remember which might have been as high as those was a pair of boots which, I hardly ever wore because they were so uncomfortable.

Right after my divorce was final in 1990 I tried for the Sonny Crocket look. But I was pretty much broke at the time so I spent maybe 2% of what his outfit would have cost. I don't think I pulled it off.

not only walked in them I literally could run in them, and I had others just as high... there's an ancient old photo in existence of me wearing platforms.. I'll see if I can dig it out... ..I also had 4inch platform sole leather boots...
