Why are Scientists so Eager to Find Extraterrestrials?

I can hardly watch any astronomy documentary without the theme of the search for extraterrestrial life being brought up. We've sent numerous probes to other planets and their moons in search of conditions favorable for life as we know it (water, oxygen, carbon). We are even looking at other planetary systems. To me it seems we are over-anxious to find other life. If we do, they may not be as friendly as we are, or give us diseases for which we have no defense (think of Native Americans encountering European settlers). Why this obsession?

I personally think it's extremely unlikely we will find extraterrestrial life. I believe it's out there, I just suspect it isn't close enough for us to detect by any foreseeable means. But, if we did, it would be mind blowing. It would mean that life is very common in the universe and we are not alone.

I think the chance of being invaded by an alien species is even more remote. Even if they could get here, which I doubt, they would probably not survive. We evolved to fit conditions on earth, and they would have evolved for conditions on their home planet, which is not likely to be the same.

It's probably the greatest of the unsolved mysteries that prompts people to solve it because "inquiring minds want to know." Discovery of a more advanced alien civilization, however, would likely shake up human society and institutions to the core.

What makes you think that the same conditions for human life are favourable for other beings?
Most humans don’t have the ability to think outside their own perspective and the reason being is that it’s all we know. Our lives have revolved around the things needed and wanted by our species.
It’s highly unlikely that life forms from other galaxies require the same basic resources.

In our planetary system. We are finding out there's no life as we know it. We go to the moon. There's nothing there we don't have on Earth except water.
The universe seems to me very hostile to humans. I'm just as curious as the next guy but when we check other planets they don't seem to be friendly or bearing the same characteristics as Earth.
Last night I watched Nova. There was a moon they examined that seemed to have all the chemical elements for life as what we have on Earth. But no life.

No expeditions lately to our moon by humans. Why? They have found out that the sun does not protect humans traveling to the moon like our atmosphere does from the radiation from the sun.

My opinion is that the Earth is a freak in the universe with all the right tools to sustain life as we know it. And still there are all kinds of places on Earth where you cannot survive without artificially having some means to sustain life that you don't find naturally. For instance. Climb Mount Everest without oxygen.

I always was a believer that there were worlds out there with life, but I changed my find when I realized that Earth really is a temporary thing and will eventually cease to exist.

Maybe because they are real and they are watching us..reference: the Black Knight, according to some it is a satellite orbiting earth to spy on us. Some claim radio signals have been detected emitting from this object. It is there and is not a myth and could be an alien probe from outside our solar system, we have sent several into outer space in attempts to let aliens know we are here. The Bible has passages that tell of other worlds. Many of our astronauts have supposedly reported UFO sighting. I dunno and like I have disclaimed a few of my relatives...if they are out there and watching... earth people were probably disclaimed many years ago. :alien:

IF there is life only on Earth and the Earth will in the future be destroyed by the expansion of the Sun that leaves the question of what purpose is the universe? To me it dos not make sense. If we ever discover intelligent life it will be done with unmanned technology simply due to the immensity of out universe. Man will never stop exploring, it is what we are. Curiosity killed the cat and several astronauts!

Correct, but just because we can't see something does not mean it is not there.

True but, now that a photo is almost expected .... Harder to say "I saw ? " And if you recall most of those that were photographed [back in the day] were out of focus. 'I couldn't get the camera focused etc' was often heard. Where as today, even a photo baffoon can take a good pic with the modern cell phone. So today that is sort of what folks would expect......jmo

What purpose is the universe! Wow that is food for thought, it makes my belief in a higher power or God even stronger. I can only believe that when we pass our soul/spirit moves on..that we cannot understand until we die. That is to heavy of a thought when I am preparing to go fishing.

Think of all the people who have claimed to see UFO's including a couple presidents.
