The schools around here are starting back August 15th! Is outrage!
We never started in the Fall until the day after Labor Day.
I remember almost everyone wore plaid on the first day. Plaid dresses on the girls and plaid shirts on the boys
and some little boys even had plaid cuffs on their pants.

The day before school started year after year, I would dread, because of all the hard work we did all summer, but seeing the little girls and boys smiling face, and asking them all how their summer was, made it all so much better knowing we cleaned, and made their school safe...

Schools in So Cal shifted to mid-August starts several years back. An Aug 15 start of two 18 week semesters puts the end of the first semester at roughly the 3rd week of December (presuming a week break at Thanksgiving). If that start is delayed until after Labor Day, the first semester doesn't end until mid-January. When I was in school, that's how it was and most students hated having to regear after the 2-3 week Christmas break for exams.

Colleges have long adopted the August starts because it makes sense. It's not like many of students live/work on family farms and have to help get the crops in, which is why the September start was originally set.

You're not wrong there!! The comparative peace on the roads...is beyond measure during the school holidays!!

A school district here in Texas (Athens,Tx) starts Aug 5th and only has classes 4 days a week Fri,Sat and Sun off..

It's hard in Florida with school starting Aug.12. When the kids go outside to play, the sun is broiling. And there's band practice, football practice, cross country, etc., all in the August heat. Yow!
some High Schools here in Texas practice at 4AM to beat the heat..

The city schools in my area start for students on September 5, 2019.

Where I live we have a 58.3% graduation rate and a 32% poverty rate. The schools are open for meals/snacks during the summer break. The program serves approx. 140,000 meals each summer.

IMO it would benefit the kids if the schools were open and active during the summer break to keep kids in a learning mode, provide them with some additional educational opportunities, sports, arts, etc... Not a full academic or compulsory schedule but as a place with various activities to keep them busy and engaged. It would cost some money but IMO it would pay dividends to the kids and our community over time.

Absolutely! Let's have school all year round!

It's never too early to start indoctrinating the little buggers into accepting Corporate America's wet dream of having us all toil in the traces non stop till we die!
