Did you take musical instrument lessons, when you were a kid? If you'd like to, why aren't you taking them today?

When I was about 12-13, you could choose to play an instrument in the high school band for free. I wanted to play the flute. Well, no flutes in that band, so they talked me into playing the trombone. If you ever wanted to become the most hated man in your neighborhood try practicing the trombone. And playing it was gross, do you realize all the spit involved? So, I gave it up. I did take up the guitar for a while. I dreamt of Peter, Paul, Mary and Fuzzybuddy. If you ever wanted to become the most hated man in your neighborhood try singing folk songs when you sound like a trombone. But, now, maybe I'd like to learn to play something? Did you take musical instrument lessons, when you were a kid? If you'd like to, why aren't you taking them today?

I had piano lessons for 6 years, starting at age 6. I've always been glad I learned to play, and to read music, at that young age. It's a skill that has brought me a great deal of pleasure throughout my life. My kids all had music lessons when they were young also, and two of them became professional musicians.

Fuzzy, I bet the local accordion player was just as hated as you were with your trombone! 😁

My uncle on my dad's side was a concert musician. Played with the N/York symphony , as well as Boston. He came home and played some 30 years with Cincinnati....He offered more than once to teach me music, and any instrument, or several. I declined,............Now I wish I had.

Yes I did take piano lessons for a few years which I enjoyed. Like Sunny, it was great to learn how to read music. My father used to play classical Chopin really well as well as pop and I used to sing while he played. It was probably the nicest thing we ever did together and I’m very grateful to have been inspired to become a musician.

In the summer before I went to high school I took a summer music class where I learned to play the saxophone. Since my oldest brother played trumpet and the other brother played trombone, they all suggested saxophone so we could have our own jazz band which we did.

Once in high school my parents purchased my first saxophone an alto ( Eb) which is the one I have now. It’s 66 years old. I also went to summer camp where I learned more about music and playing my instrument plus took grades 9 to 13 music as a subject.

To this day I still play the piano and saxophone only now it’s a soprano. It brings me so much pleasure and joy but now instead of purchasing Bb saxophone music I decide which songs I want to learn , what key I want them in and play them by ear. It’s much more rewarding plus there’s no straining my eyes. I can get up and dance around while playing which I do.

Music is a huge part of my life. Even while walking the dogs in the forest I often listen to music through my old iPhone and wireless Bose speakers and sing to my hearts content. It’s so enjoyable. ❤️

Never took them as a kid and have wondered why my parents didn't offer but that's ok. One day I may learn to play guitar. I have lessons on dvds. Just have to use them!

Yeah

from another thread of mine;

‘Again’

I’ve nursed a fondness for music
Not an obsession
But it’s there
When I was around 13 I thought the guitar was a sexy, easy thing to conquer
Mom took me to a music teacher
A teacher of the guitar
Older Spanish fellow
Thick accent
Learned the keys, notes
High E to low E
And back
Over
And over

‘again’

He’d go eat dinner

Come back

‘again’

Years later (seemed) we proceeded on to ‘Little Brown Chug’
And there we stayed

‘again’

Dinner

‘again’

After the fingertips of my left hand developed calluses on their calluses I came to the conclusion we weren’t gonna move on to House of the Rising Sun right away,
or in my lifetime

But, man, could I ever knock out Little Brown Jug

A few decades later, I happened onto another guitar
Ran thru a few Brown Jug riffs, then centered on It Takes a Worried Man

Found it relaxing

After several renditions, and weeks turned into months of relaxing, singing a worried song,
one day while I was at work, the family sold my instrument to the lowest bidder
We went to dinner at the local smorgasbord that night, their treat
During dessert, they told me of their deed
I wondered how they'd come in to such extravagant funds
Heh, I was gettin’ rather weary of that song too

Anyway, other than profound lilts from the echo of the shower walls, I’ve never been given to creating a tune worthy of listening

But

I’m a good listener

Awwwww..... they sold your guitar and you weren’t upset? 😱If anyone had sold my saxophone without my consent I would have torn a piece out of them guaranteed. 😖

I played Cello at school.. However my parents wouldn't pay for one for me for myself so I had to use one borrowed from school, and after I left school, I couldn't afford one. Today I wouldn't be able to play even if I wanted to, because I have OA in my hands

Oh how I LOVE the cello.
Did you bring the instrument home?
Those things are so huge to carry.

Took piano lessons for a couple of years at maybe 8 or 9 ? Don't really remember and hated every minute of it. My mom had played piano as a young lady, in a local band back in the 20 - 30's and she would have liked me to become proficient as well. Sorry mom. :(

I can't say why I dropped music. I took piano lessons for 12 years, took up percussion (additional to piano) in junior high, and played in marching band, concert band, orchestra, community orchestra, drum ensembles, rock band (made a bunch of money in college with that) and stopped everything when I got out of college. Donated my drum set, never purchased a piano. No explanation.

No lessons as a child, but as an adult, I tried the guitar, mandolin, harmonica, and ukulele.
I discovered that I had best stick to playing the radio.

Free!? Where was that? Where I went to school nothing was free except for the damned Tubas. Everything else you had to buy or rent your own. So since we were poor I got stuck with the Tuba. If you think there's a lot of spit involved with the Trombone, you should try the Tuba. And since the Tuba's were the school's propery that meant that you were sharing it with kids from other classes. Which means you were also sharing spit with them.
