wisdom tooth extraction

Anyone here in their 70's had the above? If so, did you have trouble recovering? Did the dentist stitch it? I've got bone loss & need to have wisdom tooth removed that has had a failed root canal. I've heard so many horror stories about this procedure I keep putting it off. Thanks for info.

I haven't had that procedure, but I thought you would have gotten some other replies.
Perhaps you still will.

It sounds like something you need to have done. I would try to find someone in your area who could recommend a local particular oral surgeon, (or tell you who to avoid) so you could have more confidence in the one you have, when you do yours.
Sometimes it helps to ask someone who they would recommend to a family member of theirs, such as someone at any office that you go to, if you dont have someone to ask.

Good luck with this!

Agree, definitely go to an oral surgeon.

Oral surgeon, of course. Has your dentist not recommended any? And...get a second opinion, a third if you don't feel comfortable with the one(s) you see.

The only thing I know about it is that stitches will dramatically reduce the likelihood of dry sockets, but sometimes the way the surgery needs to be done doesn't allow for stitches.

I hope to say nothing offensive.
but my experience is that the very best oral surgeons are from the orient (Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc)
Full grown men have fingers the size of small girls.
No problem getting near the "work"
And smart as a whip.

I would not guess their skill levels or abilities, or smartness, based on either of those factors, ancestry or body types.

My dentist (now deceased) was wonderful and had "bear fingers". Amazing what he could do. Don't know if the size of the fingers matters at all. Maybe with piano playing?

The last wisdom tooth that I had pulled was by a Navy Dentist with hands that were roughly the size of country hams. In his defense, it did not take him long and as strong as he was, he could probably have pulled my skull out through my mouth if he had wanted to.

I had mine pulled when I was 6 months pregnant and could only have a Novacaine shot and regular Tylenol.
Needless to say,it was an ordeal, made worse by drinking through a straw causing dry socket which was 10x worse than the impaction pain.
That was 39 years ago,I'm sure things have improved considerably but I would 2nd the suggestion of seeing an oral surgeon.
Good luck to you.

I had all four of mine taken out at the same time many years ago. I was afraid it was going to be awful, but it wasn't at all bad, and all healed up nicely and with no problems. The worst of it was I woke up from the anesthetic -- something the oral surgeon gave intravenously in is office -- crying and sobbing. The nurse told me that was quite common. No nausea or anything, just crying. Very minimal pain, no facial bruising or swelling, and I went back to work the next day.

I had one extracted many years ago, and it was no big deal. I recovered from it the same as from any other dental procedure. Go to a good oral surgeon.

I had one of my molars pulled last year that had had a root canal some years back. It took one year for the crater in my mouth to partially heal. It was a very large gaping hole and was quite painful throughout the jawline and gumline. It is almost completely healed now but as I said it took over a year for that to happen, it was not fun.

I had all of mine extracted surgically when I was in my 20's. The dentist told me "I'd better do it soon or I'd have problems." I didn't believe him, thought the whole thing was a racket, and mine weren't bothering me at all. But I went ahead and did it since I was in between jobs and had some time. WOW, they looked like gnarled tree branches!!! I was glad I did it, decided it wasn't a racket after all. If I had left them there, the roots would have kept on growing and probably caused nerve pain and numbness.

I had a lot of pain after the surgery, took lots of painkillers and ate soft food. My face swelled up and turned purple and yellow. But that was it. It felt fine after a few weeks.

I had a tooth pulled in my 50's. It left a cavity that food got caught in. Very annoying, but it actually healed up pretty quickly. I take a lot of vitamins, so maybe that helped.
