being ashamed of aging

One thing that irks me is when some people get so crazy and self conscious about aging. & never wanting to mention how old they are. Why on earth should I be ashamed of how old I am? I just don't get it. I refuse to devalue myself over my age. It's perfectly natural people are born they age they die. It's not like I'm doing something that no one else in mankind is doing. I tell people all the time I'm 56 headed toward 57. So what. I just don't get why someone is supposed to be embarrassed about their age
 

I try not to think about it. I think I'm more active and healthier that a lot of folks here and among my friends.

I get around with no aids and need no pills. Guess I'm lucky. Still have my sense of humor having turned

90 last April.
 
No pills that IS awesome falcon. Good for you!
 

Sharon, some people have falling for the idea that be young is the only way to hold on to their spouse, or that they loose credibility because they see all the attention our society grant the youth. They also see the disrespectful way the senior are receive.
I have a step daughter that is 50, and she dresses in her 15 year old daughter's clothes. She parties in the club's were her 26 year old son frequents. Her 30 year old daughter has become embarrassed about what she calls her mother slurry behavior, so each, and dress. :dunno:
 
Wow 90...and you're more on the ball than many 50 years younger falcon!!

I'm not in the least embarrassed about my age, I don't go announcing it to everyone, I'm lucky that I'm taken for someone much younger anyway, not that I'm old yet, I'm still in my 50's but if anyone asks me outright I tell them, they are always surprised. :)

Ina I don't think there's anything more ageing than someone dressed 30 years younger than their age
 
I always tell friends I've had... a man either loves you or he doesn't there really isn't an in between ;) If a man only loves a woman for what she looks like then he doesn't love her anyway. Yeah I've seen women 50 trying to look 13. It's just kind of sad and weird to me.
 
Sharon, at your age you are still a 'youngster'! :D I am 76 and don't hide it. Our society makes it a bit challenging at times on this age thing... TV is geared so that one is supposed to do everything possible to 'remain young' ... I think its downright funny when people turning 30 are almost having a breakdown! :) The only time they use older people in commercials is when they are advertising Rx drugs.

I have a friend that always lied about her age, but it didn't bother anyone, we just kinda laughed about it. When her twin brother died a couple of years ago, they put his obit online and she could no long lie. She just turned 89 several days ago.
 
Too funny about your friend that lied until the obit came out. I know they just start freaking out at 30. :D You know I'm actually much happier now older and fat then when I was young and pretty? Not because I'm older and fat hahaha , but because I was so STUPID when I was young and pretty :p

I never had a problem with telling my age, I'm 61 and happy to be alive and well! I grew up in a wonderful time, and I'm grateful for that too! Many of us are sharper and cooler than the younger people out there, IMO. PS: after losing my 'older' brother at the age of 30, and my 'oldest' sister at the age of 42, I'm happy to be as old as I am.

You're just older and still very pretty, some extra lbs. don't take that away from you! :love_heart: I worked with this guy that went beserk on his 40th birthday. I swear, every conversation he had was how old he was, how his eyesight was failing and how he was 'falling apart'. Some people are also too heavily influenced by the TV ads, with the young and "beautiful". :rolleyes:
 
Thanks SeaBreeze. You know these people doing all these vanity surgeries are freaking me out. Now the young ones are having all these butt implants. Dear God. They'll probably all lose their minds when they hit 30. I don't think what I like to call 'cookie cutter' beauty actually is pretty. They look like mannequins.

When younger people ask me if it upsets me to be getting older, I always ask they what alternatives they have come accross. The looks on their faces is worth answering the Silly question.:kissmy::lol1:

The only reason to feel ashamed of your age is if you have wasted the years you were given.

As for looks, they are the result of the genetic lottery.
Some of us are better looking than others from birth, depending on whatever fashion is in vogue. We must live with our allocation of beauty.

I've always been grateful to have had a body that functioned well enough, for robust health and all five senses, even if I have needed to use spectacles. As I continue to age, I expect to decline in a number of ways. I'm not at all upset to see wrinkles and to find my joints becoming less flexible but I would hope not to lose my eyesight. However, if it should come to pass I have prepared myself mentally for that possibility.

For those worried about losing their looks, may I suggest that they stop looking in mirrors. It is very liberating.
 
I do look in a mirror every now and then and wonder who that old bird is there. I don't feel as old as I look. Just celebrated my 72'nd. I don't think I'm doing too badly. Look a lot like my Mum did at the same age - genetics playing their part.
 
Growing old gracefully is what I try to do. I don't die my hair and if someone asks me how old I am I tell them. No biggie. We all get old. We all eventually die.
 
I think it is silly when some people pretend to be younger than they are. I have no intention of pretending to be anything other than me.
 
I remember when I was turning 30 .. it seemed like the end of the world. :D . After that, it never really bothered me.
Now at age 70, it seems like a badge of honor as each year turns into another and I still feel mentally and physically healthy.
It's a good feeling to be in control and enjoy life, whatever the age.

Age??? what that??? im 75 going on 76 in August.
When you are the guardian for a 16 years old female and take care of her 8 year old brother (while Daddy works),

you have to act like a 40 year to survive all this "running around" with these kid,so I guess Ill be about 41 in August.

Best thing about all this "guardian" with this gal is Im loving it.
I just told her yesterday "Make damn sure you put those girly thingys in the wastebasket and not the toilet." (GOD!! Im bad);)
 
I grew up in "fantasy" land, where fairytales "supposedly" came true, surrounded by happy-ending movies. Life, real life, was a shock for me. Aging has been a challenge, or I should say, when I hit menopause, I nearly lost my one, remaining marble. I am coming out the other side of all that, and even beginning to feel proud of my age, and surviving as long as I have.

The one thing that lingers is the fear of becoming sick, old and alone. One thing I see in those older than I, is the ones that stay active are the happiest. No one knows if we could get a disease we can't control, but also, eating right, and walking helps me feel better and have some quality of life.

I could care less if someone wants to with-hold their age. I don't, never have, can't say I wouldn't ever though. Especially in the job market.
 
I think many don't even want to admit they have aged then one day it hits them like a truck.

Brought up earlier but I think many have regrets-could've would've should've but not shame.

The mirror thing is interesting for me, because I realized one day I wasn't gawking in one every time I saw one. Sometimes I have to "remember" to look in a mirror just to make sure I have my clothes on right-side-out. Truthfully though, that's why I look in mirrors now for the most part, just to see if I look neat and clean.

I don't care what anyone says, people have some amount of vanity, even if it's not an obsession, or they are narcissus (splg?).
