Better Sleep

I have a bit of hip arthritis, and if I overexert myself doing some outdoor chores, I often wake up in the middle of the night with some hip/leg pain. I usually try to remember to take a generic Aleve pill(Naproxen Sodium) before bedtime, and that usually helps. However, a few weeks ago, I tried a different approach that seems to work much better. I bought an Orthopedic Mattress Topper at Walmart, and it has worked quite well. I have been doing a bunch of firewood log splitting, etc., over the past month and that usually triggers the pain....but, I haven't had any problems since using this topper.

These things only cost about $25 at Walmart, and other stores....such as Kohl's...are selling them for as much as $100. If you are having any trouble sleeping soundly because of night time pain, I would recommend that you try one of these.

Thanks Don. I have hip pain especially at night, too. I have bookmarked your link and am going to get one. I only need the full size and it's even less cost.

Wow, sounds like you're overdoing it? I've tried those mattresses before, did nothing for me. You should becarful you could end up needing hip replacement surgery?

I have one of those, too, and I think it does help.

What happened with your day job, the cashiering gig?

It didn't work out, there was so much heavy lifting, I was hurting my back to the point I couldn't get out of bed. I didn't tell them the truth because I didn't want it to Hurt any other seniors a chance at employment there. Getting a job at our age is difficult as it is. I've kind of figured out what I'm looking for. I'll be going to employment agencies.

Sorry to hear about your discomfort.

I think it's very important for anyone applying for a job to consider her/his physical limitations as the same may apply to heavy lifting, doing long stretches of time without bathroom breaks, etc.

While one may put on a show during a job interview, if one can't actually do what's expected in a given position, then being dismissed, in short order, makes the whole drudgery of job applications even more painful.

As it's been said, "To thine own self be true."

Yes, I have to keep reminding myself that I'm not 30 yrs old, anymore, so I pace myself when doing my chores, and take frequent breaks. My mattress is quite firm, and I probably need to get a softer mattress, but before I spend $1000 for a memory foam, etc., I figured I'd try one of these toppers.....so far, so good.
I loathe the idea of surgeries, or prescription drugs, so if there are any alternatives, I will try them first, and hopefully avoid drugs and surgery for as long as possible.

Mattress toppers are worth their weight in gold. I bought one and a load of "My Pillows" and I sleep like never before and fall asleep within less than 60 seconds.

My bed needs more than a mattress topper. My mattress looks more like a hammock and I literally have to climb out of bed. I am debating on what type of mattress to replace it with, if I ever get around to it. Mattress shopping is not my idea of fun. So many choices these days. Fifty years ago, it was just box springs.

Mattress Toppers, I found, are nothing more than comforters, with an elastic perimeter. Totally useless, for me. I bought a piece of medium density foam, put it in a hypoallergenic case, put it on top of my mattress, Covered the foam and mattress with a fitted sheet, and it's great!

Cost was $115, for CA king.

It's not my mattress, I have been waking up after 3-4 hours. Currently trying Valerian root extract (400 mg) and Chamomile tea, it seem to help me go to sleep, but after 3-4 hours I wake. I did take 3 to 5 mg of Melatatonin and when I would wake up I would take another 3 mg, but had a huge Melatonin hang over all day. Anyone have a suggestion? I don't want a RX sleep aid.

I got the same problem: pain on my left side. What a bummer!

What you are describing is called a mattress "cover'...just a piece of heavy/quilted cloth with an elastic perimeter. What I bought, and found to be quite good, is an Orthopedic Topper....a couple of inches of fairly dense foam, molded in different densities to better support the various parts of the body, laid upon the mattress, and Then, covered with a mattress "cover", and sheet, blanket, etc. The one I got was about $25.

Mine is foam like yours.
