Joke Job Vacancy advert removed for upsetting snowflakes

It's an overly sensitive person who "melts"(has a meltdown) when faced with criticism, opposing views etc. There's generally not a formulated response to opposing views, nor even a desire for meaningful debate ...a "you think differently than me so you're a bad person" sort of emoting. If a snowflake is in college in the US, they can retreat to Cry Rooms or Safe Spaces on some campuses to do their melting.

Huh

I must be some sorta ice pellet

In general, I’m against labels like snowflake or boomer. They are stereotypes, and put people in classes. There are people with irritating ways in all age groups, sexes, and races. In fact, unless you are perfect, you probably have one or more yourself. I’m sure I do.

We are all individuals, and we are shaped by our unique experiences, some good, some bad. By nature, some of us are easy going and some of us are whiny and look for insults. Some of us are hard workers and others are shiftless. It’s true for all ages.

It’s easy to see some people in a certain group acting bad and decide that they are all that way. But, it’s not fair to the many who don’t. While the sign is funny, I think I would have worded it without the reference to millennial experience. It could still get the point across without slamming a whole generation.

This thread brings up a good point. Do you really think there are more people out there with these types of traits...forget the age or ethnic differences...traits like "getting offended at the drop of a hat, touchy, touchy, touchy, walk on eggs around them, self entitled, etc.".

Do you think this is an increasing bell curve or what - there are a lot more people in the world now.

I do think our culture fosters more of these traits than past generations. The 'participation trophy' kids are growing up and then there are the adults in the generation above who thought up the participation trophy concept who obviously have the traits as well. The internet which has completely changed social dynamics provides a platform for irrational emoting.

This is also the first generation of kids who haven't been allowed to fight. My brother was tall, broad-shouldered for his age and has an easygoing personality. One night at a Jr. High school event, he saw the bully in his class picking on a younger kid and went over to stop the bully. The bully started in on my brother so he punched him in the face and the bully wilted. The coach who saw it happen said "it needed doing." Lord knows what an uproar that would cause this day and age.

The kids didn't give themselves a participation trophy. We did, our generation gave it to them. As long as there is a winning trophy as well, what's wrong with a small participation trophy? If there is no winner declared, then Yes, I would object.

A cousin of mine is/always has been a huge Snowflake. She is now 60 yrs old. Spoiled only child, doting parents, can do no wrong. Had problems in school and on jobs. Last time I saw her was 5 yrs ago, and it occurred to me she hadn't changed. Her father and husband enable her behavior. She was also very pretty; in her 20s pursued a modeling career and actually had some success locally. (She's still attractive.) So... there's that.

It's certainly our generation that started it. Edited the post above to reflect that. I don't like it in that it fosters a "showing up is enough" mentality in some who are going to be surprised when that doesn't satisfy bosses, sustain relationships or raise emotionally healthy kids.

As I said, as long as there is a clear winner, awarding participation with a small trophy is fine with me.

I think this thread explains what I said about the designation of "snowflakes" having become about politics. I have had it thrown at me, and I'm no millennial. I just wanted to get that in, having been so summarily dismissed. But I do understand about no politics here at SF, so I will go no further.

Besides, showing up is important. I had remembered the quote, not the one who made it. We all may not be great successes, but all successes need support staff.

Here is one of my younger son's bowling trophies from when he was about 10. I saved it because it's special. He takes after his Dad.

He also played soccer. I don't remember any participation trophies. Maybe things are different now.
My Granddaughter was in a two person swimming race and got a second place ribbon. She did finish though, and it was close.

I don't see that anyone summarily dismissed you. The term is often used politically. But it has a broader social application than politics alone as the OP and others have pointed out in the thread.

Annie, where on this thread has that ever been addressed? If not not for DaveA, I would say never. When someone addresses anyone as a "snowflake" it is often meant to say that you liberal folks are a bunch of crybabies, as in let them eat cake. You have yours and anybody who doesn't have theirs are just plain old losers. On yes indeed, there is a political component to calling someone a "snowflake". Just because you haven't seen it, that makes it untrue? I have come to really despise that term because I have seen it numerous times on forums and on news items and have been called that.
