My Atlas Weeps

Ok, this is not politics; it is geography. Just got a "Collins World Atlas" for Christmas. Didn't want the $200 National Geographic as, I had one once & it is just too big for this guy. Reading the atlas this morning I have come across some rather interesting (and disturbing) facts. Here they are.

1. For people who think that New York City is the centre of the world, here are the facts (cities & their populations):
Tokyo, Japan -------------- 38 million
Delhi, India --------------- 25.6 million
Shanghai, China --------- 23 million
Mexico City, Mexico ---- 21.7 million
New York, USA ----------- 21.3 million

2. The world's population is growing at an annual rate of 83 million people per year.

Why am I not surprised at global warming & pollution.

Indeed, their are just too many of us and we will increase.
Solution-None that will work
Famine has always been a problem throughout the world;
when are their going to be too many of us in Western Europe and here?

It seems to have more to do with poverty than birth control. If you look at the data, the countries with the highest growth rate are the ones that can least afford it. Think of a mainly Catholic country. How about Italy? Its rate of population growth is -0.2 percent. Sub Sahara Africa runs about +2.8 percent.

Poverty and religion. Many countries don’t approve of birth control and only want male babies. Clearly this doesn’t work so well either.

Well, when you don't have money, don't have much of anything, you still need something to do that's fun! 😈

In some poor countries, babies are an investment. They earn their keep at a young age. It was the same in the U.S. and Europe at one time. Large families were the norm. My Mom was from a family of 8, my Dad from one of 9. When people are better off, they tend to have fewer children. Male children are a form of social security when none else exists.

Yes but then you have to feed, house and clothe that fun for the next 20 plus years. Yep! Sounds like a blast to me. 😬🥺
Precisely. The poor don't think about those things. If they did, they'd be more careful. Also, the poor don't clothe and feed their kids, in many cases.

India is the one with the biggest problem, but your not going to hear about it.
Their society is closed to the poorer classes with little chance of any upward mobility.
They pass laws to change, but you can't change a cultural norm of centuries without enforcement.

A recession, much less a depression, would really put China in jeopardy. Their population has become used to eating.

Looking at that list I see that all of those Cities are in the
Northern Hemisphere!

On top of those figures all of the migrants are moving to
the Northern Hemisphere from the Southern Hemisphere.

Take the average weight of an adult and you will see that
the distribution will be top heavy, if North is the top.

Plus all the big heavy animals are being killed in Africa, this
is anothe loss of weight in the area, "Ballast" weight.

I read about the scientists worrying about the North and the
South poles "Flipping", they mean magnetically, but if the
migration carries on this way, the poles will "Flip" mechanically
and the whole World might turn turtle where North switches
places with South.

That is a scenario for chaos.

Mike.

On the bright side, the rate of population growth has been dropping since 1971. Some countries, Japan for instance, are seeing a negative rate. You can see the data here.

Dont
Yes, that is true. However, my atlas tells me that population growth has slowed or nearly stopped in the richer countries (think Canada/USA but has really increased in the poorer countries. Seems rich people have things on their mind other than a bunch of little kids. The poor of the world want big families for some sort of security even though they are not in any good position to bring them up or even to feed them.

Understanding were at an age where over population, resource shortage and who knows what else the future holds can be a relief. Especially if we see neighbor building a big boat constantly checking the weather report for rain.
