Is the world getting better as 2020 starts?

Yeah, people are still killing each other. Wars still exist. There's still an incredible amount of human suffering that is caused by other humans. Yet, everywhere peoples lives are improving. Some are struggling out of poverty. Medicine is improving our health. Our life styles are getting richer. But, on the whole, is the world a better place to live as 2020 starts?

IMO the only thing that changes is our own personal experience.

Disagree. People's lives are not improving. Apparently you don't read the same things I do. Over 70 million people in the world have been forcibly displaced --- a record high. Brookings Institute does show that extreme poverty has been dropping. But, at the same time, the wealth gap has increased exponentially. World homicide rates have been increasing. I would suggest you go to UNODC website and look at all their stats on homicide, violent crime, drugs. Drug overdose deaths in the U.S. have doubled in a decade --- more than cancer deaths. As far as medicine, have you looked at the incidence of people taking meds and compared that to outcomes? We have a huge increase, all over the world, in taking RX drugs (almost a 50% increase in the last 10 years) with virtually no change in life expectancy. That's largely due to the 'average person' trying to kill themselves by not keeping weight off, not exercising, not eating properly and running to the doc to get some magic pill to make up for their failure to take care of their health. Meds can't fix self abuse.
There are lots more stats that are difficult to gauge, such as homelessness or sexual violence. Anecdotally, they appear worse, but there is more awareness and record keeping going on now.
Are you getting the idea I'm extremely negative on where the world is headed? My own situation is great, but I just see/read about so many people with so many issues.

The climate is getting worse and it is approaching a point of no return on trying to clean up the mess we have made. Russia still wants to rebuild the Soviet Union and China no longer will hold presidential elections. America has never been so politically divided. The Middle East is in a state of chaos. Hurry for progress!

Getting better? You need to put down that crack pipe!

The homeless situation will only get worse, as the solution is something nobody will push for. Violence is now an accepted part of everyday life. The Southwest US is slowly undergoing desertification, below the pace where the average person notices, water and air quality is getting worse, wars are going on with no end in sight. Water wars, in the future, will up the level of violence.

No, the world is in decline, for our species. Once we're gone, Earth will heal, and all other lifeforms, except our obligate parasites, will be the better for that.

I do realize the question is abstract, but how does one logically quantify an answer? For some it will be far better, for many more it will be much worse. Rulers enjoy their season of power while commoners are crushed. Some laugh while others mourn.

Ah, but, saaaay, 300 BC I bet there were more deaths/homicides per capita then than now

Good post

What'cha living on an isolated island didn't work for Tom Hanks or Robinson Curso (sp).

now for silly
One of the cures for the world's problems is to watch 'Gunsmoke.' Matt Dillion only kills folks one at a time.
Thought of you Fuzzbuddy with preview on TV..."He must be successful, the fate of all humans depends on it...."
Ah, turn on 'Gunsmoke.'

America has never been so politically divided? How about, say, 1860 to 1865.

China is not holding elections, but it's not under Mao, either. Russia is not under Stalin. And the Middle East has been in chaos since WWII.

White Settlement, close to Fort Worth 12-29-19.
Church of Christ, man with shotgun kills two.
Church had two armed parishioners attending church, one kill the gunman.

The church has regular security force, apparently made up of parishioners: is that how the world is turning, you have to wear
your gun to church?
