One of the bigger worries. Antarctica ice melt

Climate of Antarctica
The climate of Antarctica is the coldest on Earth. The lowest air temperature record on Antarctica was set on 21 July 1983, when −89.2 °C was observed at Vostok Station. Satellite measurements have identified even lower ground temperatures, with −93.2 °C having been observed at the cloud-free East Antarctic Plateau on 10 August 2010.Wikipedia
Today it reached 18.3 c. In my way of thinking this cannot be good

The ice melt on Greenland and Antarctica is certainly going to cause massive problems in years to come. The climate is slowly warming, and the oceans slowly rising...and those events are increasing. By the end of this century, the coastal impacts will begin to be felt, as shoreline properties and cities are increasingly being faced with floods, etc. In another century, or two, there will be a massive migration inland as coastal cities become inundated....billions of people will be displaced, as low lying coastal areas become uninhabitable. The U.S. alone could lose as much as 17% of it's current landmass....everything from Houston, TX., to Boston MA may very well be underwater. The industrial revolution and use of fossil fuels over the past 100+ years is generally blamed for the airborne pollution which has triggered this phenomenon.

The movement to replace fossil fuel use is going to prove to be of little use, as the tipping point is almost here....and there is no way our societies could cease fossil fuel use in time to make a difference. Besides, the release of Methane...from farm animals, and the melting permafrost in North America and Russia is proving to be as bad, or worse, than fossil fuel use. Plus, billions of tons of this gas are locked in the oceans, and being released as the oceans warm.

It's a tossup between climate change and overpopulation as to which will "reform" human society, first. Those living 100+ years from now will know a far different world than the one we live in today.

It is true that the plant warms and then becomes cold, but these cycles start slowly and end slowly, they last for a few hundred thousand years.
A plant showing the type of warmth we have now should take a few thousand years.

Scientist have found dinosaur bones in the Artic and Antarctica, can Shell and Texaco...
be far behind?
'Boys were gonn'a drill for oil; were not going to warm this planet, were going to fry it.'

Coastal change will be witnessed by some folks on this forum. I read it has already started some where at the shoreline at one of the Carolinas.

Agreed but isn't the issue "is it a cycle or something more serious?"

seas will rise dramatically I have read ' strange how the earths nature does all this 'think there may be reasons
for it -not sure global warming is the culprit -the world causes change' its like the ice age happened seas dried up
and became deserts etc , mother nature something we cannot alter !

So would we rather have a planet at 65 degrees F or a planet at minus 190 degrees F?

The earth is ever changing , evolving.......there is nothing we can do about it.

The earth is approximately 4.5 billion years old. Mankind has inhabited the earth for approximately 6 million years only......Hard to believe our influence / impact on earth has been that great . Almost arrogant to even think so.

And , do we really want to give back/give up......all that we have gained during the industrial revolution ? I surely do not !!

Or,... "flashback to the late 1800s, and you’ll meet a very different New York where almost five million pounds of manure was being dumped on the city streets every day (we can imagine how that would effect our commute to the office). At the rate horse dung was accumulating, it was predicted that by the year 1930, horse manure would reach the level of Manhattan’s third-story windows. With poop literally lining the city streets."......Not to mention the millions of gallons of horse urine each day as well.....Bet that smelled really nice.........Add to that the dead horse carcasses that were routinely just discarded in any convenient location.

Is that better ?

Here's a good read on the subject......

The proper term is not "will". but "is". The planet is getting warmer. Ice is melting. The sea is rising. Climate change is not something that will happen over eons in the future. It is happening , now. I'm 73, and I can tell you that the winters in Northeastern PA. have become much tamer than they were only 30 years ago. And the cause of the change is not natural variations, but man's use of fossil fuels. Everything that science predicted about climate change, due the use of fossil fuels is happening, now. How can you dump the exhaust from billions of cars, billions of engines, millions of factories, etc. and not believe it will have an effect on our atmosphere? Go smell a tailpipe for a hour, and, then come tell me there's no problem. The same science that predicts death to humans from fossil fuel exhaust, predicted the changes in climate we are seeing today.
I don't have any idea what to do about it. I'm not that smart. I only know there are way too many corroborating facts that are piling up, telling us climate change is happening.

Not doubting climate change for a minute.....I have noticed the warmer temps here as well. Just do not believe mankind is having that much effect on it, and what effect we have had, has yielded nothing but good things for us. To bring about a noticeable change will take a century or more.....I'm not sorry at all for what we have reaped from our actions. Or what damage we may have done to the earth in the process. I do believe that the smart people will figure it out, for the future I'll never see.

As for the earth itself & or mother nature?......Both will do as they please/change as they will. Worrying over it is futile.

Climate of Antarctica
"....The climate of Antarctica is the coldest on Earth......this cannot be good....".
Fake news! I have it on good authority from a couple of neighbors that they read that ice disappears from one area, but it's made up for in another. We have zero loss. (and I bet half the population believes this).

Way beyond that. A number of cities, including Miami, are looking at engineering buildings that will sit much higher than they do now, sea walls, and other ideas to mitigate coastal flooding damage to buildings. I saw something, I believe it was proposed, that all buildings in Miami (or within some specified distance to water?) would not allow HVAC systems underground. They would have to be installed several floors up. One of the major issues with storm surges is knocking out power due to flooding. Perhaps Florida residents have some knowledge of this.

And then, there's this. https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/145185/major-greenland-glacier-is-growing

Major Greenland Glacier is Growing.

"Jakobshavn glacier has spent decades in retreat—that is, until scientists observed an unexpected advance between 2016 and 2017. In addition to growing toward the ocean, the glacier was found to be slowing and thickening. New data collected in March 2019 confirm that the glacier has grown for the third year in a row, and scientists attribute the change to cool ocean waters. "

You cannot deny that the planet is getting warmer. The question is why. There are no natural forces, which can account for this. We are not getting closer to the sun. The sun's energy output hasn't changed. The amount of volcanic activity hasn't changed. The only thing , which has changed is that man has dumped billions of tons of carbon into the atmosphere. When you see a car on the road, it's expelling something like 5 lbs. of carbon a hour into the air. EVERYONE of those cars-through out the world. Now throw in power plants factories, mowers, etc. That's a massive amount of carbon. I don't know what to do-we can't live in 2020 without some kind of energy source. But we are screwing around with the planet-and it's definitely going to come back, and bite us.

I agree it is getting warmer in winter here as well...Last summer however was mild...not particularly hot...But how do we know there are no natural forces causing it? The earth is ever changing.

But let's just say , for argument that I'm entirely wrong......

What are you willing to give up? Will you do without heat? Without A/C....Will you buy a horse & give up your car? Are you willing to go back to shooting your supper ? Are you willing to go back to getting your water at the creek....with a bucket?....etc & so-on.

I embrace all these things , and want to keep them. If we stop what the so called enviro-scientist say we should stop to save the planet......all those conveniences go away.

Think it over, before ya jump on the bandwagon .

This was posted by a guy on another forum. Think about it.

........................... PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME.......

Let me get this straight. I go to my local supermarket & buy a pack of sliced ham wrapped in plastic, a loaf of bread in a plastic bag, 4L of milk in a plastic carton, a pack of napkins wrapped in plastic, a Greek salad in a plastic container, a plastic bottle of mustard & a plastic bottle of ketchup, & they won't give me a plastic bag to carry it home because the plastic bag is bad for the environment?

You all should be worrying about where your coffin will be floating around to its final resting place. For me, I asked that my ash be launched into deep space with sufficient propulsion to leave the gravitation pull of the sun (read Voyager 1 and 2). Earth is not where I want to end up forever.

Why would you have to 'give it up'. We're talking about continued development of clean, alternative, energy. I don't understand why anti-environmentalists think we would lose everything. Solar, wind, wave, geothermal energy.

Because those alternatives mentioned , have [so-far] proven not to be viable? Do you have an alternative for home heat/A/C source now ? And the [tree-huggers] tend to insist that we stop our bad practices now or.........?

Yes. Geothermal.
"...Geothermal heat pumps (GHPs), also known as ground-source heat pumps, can heat, cool, and even supply hot water to a home by transferring heat to or from the ground. This technology has been keeping consumers comfortable for more than 50 years and can cut energy bills by up to 65% compared to traditional HVAC units.....".

Yes. Solar.
Why Go Solar? | Solar Can Heat and Cool Your Home

Heck, I've seen these systems installed on This Old House. What's 'not viable'??? These systems are out there with lots of companies that can build/install them.

So many good ideas, impressive.
I am doing my bit where I can, enough that the power people have asked twice what I was doing to cut how much power I use. Newest lights to start, solar lights, there are some very good ones out there. Solar heating, using windows when there is sunlight which works well enough that I often have to close curtains because of the heat.
The dates they were created are shown below, some new research is being done in this.
I point this out to show that there is something everyone can do, however small it may seem. I am looking into Freznal lens.
Fres·nel
(frā-nĕl′), Augustin Jean 1788-1827.
French physicist who supported the wave theory of light, investigated polarized light, and developed a compound lens for use in lighthouses.
Interesting what happens when you focus light from a 3x5 ft lens to a point of light less than half an inch. I found them in the dump in projection TVs.

Exactly. In time, suitable alternatives for transport, heating etc... will be available, but we should not be forced to accept technology that is not currently fit for purpose just to please a bunch of "tree huggers".

Yes, IN TIME, we may have electric cars and trucks with the same price, performance, range and carrying capacity as current vehicles. We may also have the extra generating capacity to re-charge them and an up-rated electricity to supply to all the charging points.

Ground source heat pumps -great if you have the ground! Air source ? not so good.

I suspect, it's us "ordinary" folk who will be hardest hit and also have to foot the bill for all this. And while it's us to have to suffer, the world will heat and cool and we won't be able to do a thing about it.

Oh, and while I'm here, I have done my bit to insulate my house, fit LED lighting and use the most efficient home appliances that I can reasonably obtain. It won't save the planet, but it's saved me some money.

And where are you going to get the electricity to power the pump?

To respond to rpg: I don't have answers as to what were are supposed to do. But I think it's time we face the fact that our massive use of fossil fuels is having an effect on the planet. And no, it's not just the normal variations of climate. Global warming is happening now, not in some distant future, when our generation is long dead. We are bringing about enormous changes, and we are unprepared for them.
