The music of your youth was the best?

You can almost tell someones age, by the music they think was the best ever written. For those in their 80s , it's Frank Sinatra.. I'm 73 so my teens year were around 1960-64. And that's exactly the period of music, well, that's music to my ears. Do you think the best music was music from your youth?
 

My music was of the 50's and early 60's I still enjoy some of it but true to my contrarian nature, I really prefer the music of the big bands from the 40's. Perhaps that is because I played a trumpet for years and appreciate the skill of the musicians from the swing era. I prefer their stuff over the three chords and a drum of the rock n roll crowd.
 
You also can tell who are/who have been professional musicians, using the above query: Most musicians who appreciate the art of music, who respect the craft and creativity of those who play, will answer that no time period holds a monopoly on great music. All great music is great, something musicians, and those who recognize talent, are quick to understand.

I am a fan of all great music. As former leader of, "The Most Versatile Dance Band In The Universe!" I put together a repertoire that ranged from 40's Swing to 90's Rock, and all points in between. In my last band, I added hip-hop and rap.

Anyone who boosts one music genre over another, who decries the "garbage that passes for music, today," is someone who fails to understand what great music is truly about.
 
OMG Yes! Late 50's, early 60's WAS THE BEST MUSIC EVER!!!! Love it and listen to it EVERY DAY! Yes ,I can appreciate more sophisticated music a smooth jazz but my great love is Rock and Roll, Rhythm and Blues, guitar Instrumentals, Rockabilly, Doo-op, Can't live without it!
 
No necessarily! I really liked the music I listened to in the 60’s as well as every other decade that passed. I’m as thrilled with today’s music. There’s so much variety to please everyone with every musical taste and genre imaginable. The only music I’m not thrilled with is the old ‘cry in your beer’ country or heavy mental. Like treeguy states, I’m a fan of all great music in most genres. I play from big band era to modern pop.

Music in my teen years was fun & I think a reflection of the times like most music

While walking a mix of everything from the 1920's to now
except for rap. Can't quite get into some of the negativity & violence.
 
I would love to see people stop thinking the things they love the most are the best. Yes, they are the best *for them* but that doesn't make it the best in comparison with all things they don't love. If one doesn't like or love something that someone else likes or loves it means that they either don't appreciate it the same way the other person does or that it doesn't give them what they want from the collection of things it belongs to.

For example I'm not a fan of rap in general because I like more melody and more intricate instrumentation in the music I listen to. However I do recognize and appreciate the interesting rhythms and rhyming in rap without enjoying most of it that much. Also some of the wording in some rap is offensive to me so I don't appreciate it as much as people who are not offended by the content. However that doesn't make me label it bad or crap.

So to answer the original question, no I do not like the music of my youth the most. There are a few things from it that I still love, but I tend to prefer the music of the last decade to that of previous decades. However I love a lot of music from the 50's through the present day. I keep listening to new music because it delights me and I find a lot of new music that I love.
 
My father loved music, and had a wide variety of albums which I listened to constantly through the summer holidays. Big band music, waltzes, string instrumentals .. of course, I bought my own records - Connie Frances and whoever was popular in the 60's. I have a favourite genre, which is Soul/R&B, but I appreciate all music.
 
Mine was the 70's and to this day it's still my favourite genre.. but only the first half pre 1976 .. .. having grown up tho' as a child listening to 60's music on my mothers' wireless alongside her beloved Crooners .. I love that too... . Not a lot in it tbh, but if it came right down to the wire.. my teen years 70's music would win... :D🎧🎸🎶

now you see, I wasn't even a glint in my parents eye in the 40's, in fact my mother was still a child.... but I luuuuurve Big band music... 🎶🎷🎺

Lois you're roughly around the same age as my mum would have been.. she was a teen in the early 50's .. her favourite music was 50's crooners basically, Jim Reeves, Matt Munroe, perry Como, .. and thenTom Jones in the 60's.. she wasn't keen on chart music

I discovered Matt Monro when I was stationed in France, Holly. I fell in love with his voice. We had Bobby Darin, Elvis, etc. and then along came Tom Jones and Englebert. Dean Martin was another favorite and some were nuts about Tony Bennett, but I never cared for him. There were also still holdovers from the 40s such as Vic Damone, Perry Como, Dick Haymes, Johnny Ray, and the like. Lots of music to say nothing of the popular girl singers of which there were so many.

In Our house music was almost all the time,so I loved music from my parents generation Dean Martin especially. I love Doowop which was my generation growing up. Roy Orbison was one of my favorite singers. Bobby Rydell, Fabian and Frankie Avalon lived in my neighborhood and I liked all of them. I also liked some of the 70's songs because my Son would listen to that generation and my daughter's generation in the 80's. I love music.
 
I noticed that some music purists object to the term , the "best". It seems for a lot of us feel that the music of our teen years is our favorite. Why the music of our teen years is so endearing, I don't know, but it is.

Those are the years of our youth, young love, dancing, good friends, sweet innocence, so I presume that's a couple of reasons.
