NASCAR bans fans from flying the Confederate flag at races

I guess I’m too old to get all this stuff that’s going on. Tv shows being pulled, statues taken down, Military bases wanting to change their names. All my life growing up, it was just the way it was. No offense taken, no thought whatsoever given to it.
It’s a whole new world out there and I’m not getting it at all. But, at my age, it makes no difference. Our ancestors probably said the same thing about my generation.
People now are obsessed with "outrage" and political correctness. So tiresome.

There's a difference between rewriting history and celebrating it via monuments, statues, flags and the like. This is especially true about a civil war fought because half of our country wanted to continue owning and enslaving millions. Young people in our country are painfully aware of our racist past. And present.

If you ask some African American who are descendants of slaves about their feelings toward the confederate flag and confederate monuments, you might develop some emotion over their display.
IMO if we are to embrace diversity we at least have to be willing to tolerate the symbols that have meaning to various groups of people past and present.

I would have much greater hope for a United States of America if young people spent their time building things up instead of tearing things down.

An example in my own city is a monument of Christopher Columbus that was paid for by many small donations over several years by Italian immigrants to our city. The statue and the fountain in a place of honor was a symbol to the Italian Americans that they had finally been accepted into our community. Now it has become a symbol of hatred with some people in our community that want it torn down. IMO it is a very sad example of the beginnings of mob rule.

The local BLM protestors in my city are now working with city leaders to create some street art that has meaning for them. The idea is being welcomed and is gaining support with local sponsors to be a part of the upcoming Juneteenth celebration in the center city.

IMO that is better than destroying things that you don't understand or simply don't agree with.

As far as the statues and monuments that have already been destroyed by vandals I believe that they should be left as they are for future generations to see and admire.

Precisely. (y)

When I visited Savannah and Charleston a few years ago, I was struck by the attitudes there. Just visit any gift shop, museum, book store, etc. You would think you are somehow wrong about the Civil War; it was really won by "our brave boys in gray!"

For some reason, I thought "Juneteenth" was a Texas thing.

I'm a Civil War Nut. And I was never terribly offended by Confederate battle flags, used during the war. What the flags represented after the war is all together a different thing. Post Civil War, they were used as a symbol of opression, fear, and white supremacy. The flags do not represent the men, who died in the war. There were over 200,000 blacks, who served in that war, and fought for their freedom. The flag has been bastardized by some, who want to perpetuate the 150 years of hate crimes since the war.

Excellent! I refused to do tattoos of those flags, at my shop. They are offensive to many folks, myself included.
And yet a Baker can be forced to make a cake for something they find Offensive!
This is the general Issue thats been pissing me off for years...
You MUST agree to every little whim of every little group or your a " Insert label of choice"
And your Opinion cant be stated.... IF IT OFFENDS SOMEONE....
Tree Guy... I disagree with NASCARs choice, But applaud your for standing your line... It shows Integrity, and I respect you for that.

We have become the land of the constantly offended.

I seriously doubt more than a few here would know which flag flew from the battery firing on Ft Sumter without using google

The elites start the war, the poor die in it.

The confederate flag is as offensive to most African-Americans as the Nazi flag is to most Jews. Both are symbols of horrific persecution.

Some things are worthy of being offended by.

I was born/raised in the Chicago area and worked in the South for two years in my early 30's during the early 80's. Unless you have lived there for a while it is impossible to say anything about the people/culture. I hope I'm wrong but America could be lighting a torch that my wind up burning more than a flag.

I contracted to a company that about 10-11 years ago that fired one of their employees for having the confederate flag decal covering his rear window. Oddly, they did it during a race related lawsuit was filed against them by a group of their black employees which the employees won big time. They also fired an employee that had the Confederate flag tattooed covering his back. He screwed up by taking his shirt off to show it.
