Mavericks Band Member Assaulted in Tennessee for Speaking Spanish

This absolutely should NOT happen, but it does.

In fact, there are even movies out there where an actor will ask another actor "do you speak English?" or "why don't you speak English?". One movie is The Hunt For Red October and another is Under Siege. In Under Siege, Gary Busey angerly asks a foreign submarine crew member, "why don't use speak English?"

IMHO, it's another ignorant attack. I'm not buying into to some conspiracy theory at this time.

This isn't meant to pick on you or your wording, it's just that your response triggered some questions and ideas. I hope that I'm not offending you by using your response for my comments. If you do feel that way I will be happy to delete my response.

Are there anything other than ignorant attacks?

Also I'd call it more of a hateful attack rather than an ignorant one. It's also intolerant one as well in my mind. To me this is a combination of lashing out at people who aren't "normal" and who are different.

I'd agree that there are plenty of people who are not part of hateful groups who still do plenty of hateful things. They may hang out with people who think the same way they do but they may not be organized to promote and spread their hate.

Of course there are, Asp3! This is off the subject, but not every attack is evil or ignorant. What if a group of people saw someone brutally assaulting a child, or an innocent animal, or even just some miscellaneous person walking down the street? Shouldn't they attack the assaulter, if at all possible, in order to stop them?

Of course, none of this applies to this assault. It sounds like a hate crime, and I predict that it will be prosecuted as one.

I quoted this post to highlight (in bold) how civil a disagreement or questioning (or as in this case, a post triggered still more thoughts) of what somebody else posted, can be done. I wish that all such instances could be handle with this kind of civility. Kudos, asp3!

As for the OP, I agree with those here who said that it is difficult to know whether the situation was just a couple of drunk yahoos or members of some sort of hate group. I would like to think it was the former, not that it makes it any less wrong, but it is worrisome how over the past few years, hate groups have been coming out of the woodwork and become very active. The ideal situation would be to not have these situations happen at all, regardless of who is behind them. As for the thread, so far, all posts have brought up very good points.

It's probably just a semantics difference between the two of us but I consider the examples you gave as defending someone or something as opposed to attacking someone. Sometimes the only way to defend someone is to physically engage someone else, but there are other times when you can do so without attacking the person who is harming the person or thing you are defending.

Always possible Rose, and in times past I probably would have thought the same. In today's America, I'm not so quick to pass it off as a harmless act when combined with other daily happenings around us.
Yes they have been emboldened! And we know why. What gets me about this case is that the band members were talking amongst themselves. It was nobody elee's business what language they were speaking. SMDH!!

Oh man, The Mavericks was one of my favorite bands, back when I was into Country & Western music. Speaking Spanish here in California is normal, of course California was part of Mexico until 1848. Racism and White supremacist groups have been enabled and emboldened considerably since 2017.
