This story is happening right here in Alabama where I live, but it can also be happening in jails all across the United States.
A 19 year old boy, who was accused of shoplifting some dvd's developed gangrene from a wound in his foot. Even though it could have been treated early on, the Madison County jail did nothing to treat this boy. When the foot odor became strong enough to be noticable, he was hosed down and moved to another cell. He was not fed, or even given water; was not even seen by a nurse for his infected foot.
They found him dead in his cell from a blood clot that originated from his foot.
This same county jail is also accused of letting two female inmates die without receiving treatment from very treatable injuries.
Apparently, the county has liability insurance that will pay for any lawsuits that happen as a result of inmate deaths; but if they actually treat the patient, then it comes out of the county budget for the jail.
So, from their point of view, it is cheaper to just let the inmate die, and hope there is no lawsuit.
