Lockdown hypocrisy

We watched a lawyer show last night. It was pretty preachy, as Hollywood often is, and it was about Covid. Sometimes the characters were wearing masks, sometimes they were not. Ditto for social distancing. In California, the governor doesn't want you to go to church, but filming a TV show is okay? You can't go to a gym or get your hair cut, but you can film a TV show. Hmmm. Is the entertainment industry "essential?" And don[t tell me they're filming "in a bubble" because that's not at all believable. Just one of the many ways lockdowns are only for some people.

Since one of my sons is a producer, my nephew owns a kraft services company, and a good friend is a makeup artist, I can tell you that everyone involved is tested twice a week, the "talent" wears masks when not on camera or being made up, and all support personnel wear masks at all times throughout the day. Social distancing has been set up as much as possible.

People who test positive are immediately sent home to quarantine for two weeks, and the production company must get negative test results from their own (nasal swab) testing company before the person is permitted to return to work.

Carol, hasn't there been a tremendous slowdown in filming? I was under the impression that it had largely stopped.

I think lockdowns are insane especially at this point, almost 9 full months into the pandemic . It's not going to help and neither is the vaccine. This may sound very negative, but reality often is. It will fail because too many people are sick and tired of it than are scared witless about it.

The medical experts told us last March we would be staying in for 4 weeks, 2 covid cycles, to get a step up on the virus. Nine months latter we're worse off than before and every time we shut down and reopen more people get sick so we shut down again. It's a vicious circle with no positive outcome in sight. And contrary to what Dr. Fauci said, we were not better prepared to handle the second wave. If the numbers are to be believed, we're doing worse than we were last March

We're experiencing toilet paper rationing again here for the first time since last June because now people know what to expect and to prepare for it. But it's such a sad sign to me. I remember thinking last spring the only thing worse than this would be this in winter time and it looks like that's exactly what is heading our way.

The lockdown rules are for us peons, not the elite. Witness Pelosi's hair appointment, Newsome's restaurant party, the Denver mayor flying to Houston for a holiday after advising people to stay home, etc., etc. "Do as I say and not as I do." The hypocrisy is appalling.

And don't get me started on the Emmy award for that Cuomo idiot. More proof that the award shows are pure BS.

Lock downs just weaken the immune system. We must be socialized in order to build it up. I do believe in masks and social distancing in strange places, however. A nurse friend of mine was recently re-infected and that only makes me more aware of my surroundings since I do not want that to happen to me.

Netflix is just beginning to film some movie here in Boston, big stars like Cate Blanchett, Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lawrence. On the local news last night, I saw a clip of Leonardo DiCaprio and some other people walking around the streets - no masks, no social distancing.
The interviewer mentioned that they wouldn't be wearing masks while filming, but would be tested often. You can be tested today, be negative, then be contagious a couple days later, with or without symptoms. How does anyone expect us "ordinary folk" to obey the rules when the people my dad used to call "big shots" don't.

I'm sick of all the arguments, I don't care what anyone else does, I'm going to wear a mask and socially distance because I have enough health issues without inviting more.

Carol I have no idea how things are recorded or filmed in the USA , I would imagine very much like they are here, and I can promise you that you would be astonished at the lengths programme makers have gone to make pandemic friendly television shows. It's been very hard work to do, both for the cast but more so for production crews .

I could fill this page explaining exactly how it's done to make it look as tho' people are standing very close to each other in a shot, when in fact they are at least 6 feet away from each other and in some instances there's perspex between them, removed of course at the edit so Viewers can't see it.
Believe me this is very stressful and very, hard work, but it's certainly and definitely being done.

The "Speed" at which this virus appeared, and is spreading, has left most "experts" guessing. We are certainly in the midst of one of the strangest events that humanity has experienced in many decades. No one knows the answers, and we are learning more every day. Hopefully, these vaccines will reverse the disease, but that, too, remains to be proven. Many of these "lockdowns" are suggested, or implemented well after the damage has been done. Given the "performance" of most politicians....from local commissioners, all the way to the very top in Washington, putting any trust in those people is a big gamble. For the time being, the responsibility for safety relies primarily on the individual, and their willingness to exhibit common sense in protecting themselves, and those around them.

In an effort to keep this thread from being shut down for being political I'll add that the White House has had two separate outbreaks from events they held with most people not wearing masks. So now this thread has had some Republican examples listed in response to the only Democratic examples listed by C'est Moi. Now the thread is balanced, non-political and shouldn't have any more political replies.

Don't forget the L.A. Councilwoman who voted to close indoor & outdoor dining, then she dined at her favorite restaurant with a bunch of her friends. When the news media did a report on it, her explanation was: "That is my favorite restaurant.....I've been eating there for years.....I was supporting the business."
Uh......yeah. What does that have to do with Covid? And, HOW STUPID DO YOU THINK WE ARE?

Speaking as a person who is not too keen for either party, I think the criticisms listed below of Democrats in post #6 by @C'est Moi share commonality in that they hypocritically call for more stringent guidelines than they personally live by. Your tit for tat criticism to 'balance' the thread isn't the same thing. The problem there is that the Republican White House hasn't taken it seriously enough. Both are wrong.

Exactly this....

I don't understand how or why the football teams play? No masks. No fans, no distancing.

BTW The Chicago mayor was criticized for her hairdresser appt in March. She said she has to look good on camera.
She is on TV only occasionally.

I consider it hypocritical to go forward as if nothing is wrong when you know that you and the people you are meeting with have access to better testing, better healthcare and better resources than most of the rest of the country. I'd agree that it's a different type of hypocrisy but it's still hypocrisy. They're both lockdown hypocrisy just from different angles that are both wrong.

Same with baseball teams. If an enterprise makes big money, the rules don't apply.

IMO the only thing that matters is how each of us handles ourselves during the pandemic.

Each time we go out in public and have contact with people we increase our odds of contracting the disease. We each need to decide how important each of those contacts are and accept/mitigate the risks to ourselves and our families.
