Can you spot a liar?

I'm not sure there is really any way.. Sometimes it just boils down to a gut feeling about a person.
 

Therapists or mental health professionals tell you that habitual liars are the hardest cases to treat. You have to be on guard for answers that may or may not be truthful. Liars will tell them anything they want to hear just to move on.
 
I once read that if someone constantly puts the fingers near their nose or mouth, they are lying. They are unconsciously trying to hide their lie.

Funny how these things change over the years as society changes. I was a private investigator in my younger years and we were trained that if you are asking a question and a person looks to the left, he is thinking up a quick lie. Something to do with which part of the brain he is using. Also if a person is lying he/she will use a lot of terms in the conversation like "I got to be honest with you"...."To tell the truth.....If truth be known.....With all honesty", etc. etc. etc.

Haven't they come up with an updated explanation for when people's eyes look up, down, left or right?

Something about their accessing long- or short-term memories, and/or thinking about the future?

I didn't remember her name but I sure remembered Cheech and Chong doing that skit, LOL!! Here's the video my buddy Phil sent me, it's hard to hear some of the voices but it was still good, LOL!!

My husband had an employee who was like that! It was like he couldn't help himself, it was compulsive and nobody ever believed anything he said and he knew that but he continued anyway. When he found out I was going to have our first baby, all of a sudden his girlfriend was pregnant too except she had an eleven month gestation!
 
Compulsive liars ARE a hoot to deal with, aren't they?

I remember once I had a meeting of 50 compulsive liars in a community center, and a fire broke out. Everyone but me passed out, and I carried all 50 of them to safety, then I put out the fire with bottles of Perrier.

In between carrying the liars and putting out the fire, I rescued 12 cats and 23 dogs.

It's like they feel they don't have a life worth talking about so they invent one. There are those sad cases for sure:( Oh shoot you guys, gotta run, forgot to put the top up on my Mercedes, be back soon.
 
There are behaviourial signs of deception to look for, but interpreting them correctly is another matter altogether.

You are right, Denise--good post... What they call Vagrant Liars lie without cause or real reason, except to reflect that they are creating their OWN world. I have usually found them to be sadly lacking in self-esteem... It doesn't help to take offense... it really is their problem... there are some that I actually feel sorry for. The ones that actually DO harm people by their lying are the ones I DO take offense to... most of them are just bullshitters trying to look and sound important.
