Which American Accent Do You Have?

Northern/western New England, pretty close, I’m an UPSTATE NY Yankee.
(Not a down state “ Noo Yawkuh”)
Can’t seem to lose it even after having lived in 8 different states. Away from “home”, I get asked where I’m from.

When I was surfing around various forums for a place of like minded people, I came across one such forum where a spat-fest was the national sport. One "lady" was spitting blood & feathers for being referred to as a lady. Another objected, in a vitriolic way, to being called, a woman. And the tone of the language. Your objection was jocular, but someone there might have said: "What gives you the right........"
I read through a couple of threads and moved on. What is it about the internet that everyone has got a whinge to air in public?
Anonymity allows some to show their worst side.

Neutral here, according to the quiz. I was born and raised in the heart of the Midwest, lived in Michigan and the tidewater area of Virginia and moved to Florida 42 years ago. Strangely enough, I have been asked on more than one occasion if I was Canadian. That's probably from the remnants of the Tidewater accent. I do pronounce couch and mouse with a bit of a Tidewater twang.

I grew up in Denver, and have lived in the Midwest all my life....if I have an "accent", it is probably minor. Back when I was in the military, and we had people from all over the nation, it was kind of amusing to hear someone from Boston trying to talk with someone from the deep South...almost like 2 different languages.

I got
Mid Atlantic

Also known as a "Philadelphia accent" but also heard in south Jersey, Baltimore, and thereabouts.

They were 100% correct since I was born and raised in Philadelphia.

It does make you wonder what these people are like in the flesh. I suspect that the internet gives people a chance to show their true nature, which they keep under control normally. It's one thing to fall out with a stranger on the internet, quite another to offend someone you have to live with.
Also, there is the anonymity factor on the internet since we really don't KNOW each other in person.

As an example, there were two Vietnam veterans discussing aspects of their experiences in the military sub-forum. Another guy butted in complaining that Vietnam veterans always have to talk about their experiences while veterans of other wars just shut up about it. I joined the conversation to refute that comment, and then that guy went on to say how we lost the war, and on and on. He is wrong, has his facts all twisted, but that doesn't matter to a guy like that. When I posted with the facts, he never responded and was off to spew in another thread elsewhere in the forum. I can tell you with certainty that if this had happened in person, that guy would not have been able to walk away. You don't do that kind of thing in person, only on the internet. The only thing I do now about it is to just not respond to any of his posts or participate in his threads, but I don't have him on "ignore".

yep I think I know that forum... it's completely exhausting just to read it much less get involved in it

Test says neutral but it was distinctly southern until the advent of shows like Jerry Springer, Maury Povich began to convey an image of southern that was not at all flattering. I began trying to neutralize and I suppose I succeeded, at least on paper.

I have a New Jersey accent and it's pretty pronounced. When the hubby and I took trips across the country as soon as I opened my mouth they knew where I was from. I've lived my whole life in Jersey as well as my parents and grandparents so its engrained in my speech.

Northern

You have a Northern accent. That could either be the Chicago/Detroit/Cleveland/Buffalo accent (easily recognizable) or the Western New England accent that news networks go for.

They got me right!

Comparing my speech & pronunciation with people in other parts of the country, I have to say that I have no distinct accent, although I imagine I would be identified as being from the West. However, when I'm visiting family in North Carolina I find myself "catching" the local accent readily. For me- hearing the Southern accent is like comfort food for me, maybe a reminder of how my parents and grandparents spoke when I was growing up.
