Pancake Day

Today is Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day as it's called in England. How many of you will be eating pancakes today?

Here in Sweden we don't eat pancakes today, actually for some unknown reason we eat thick yellow pea soup followed by pancakes on Thursdays. No self respecting lunch restaurant would not have pea soup and pancakes as part of their Thursday set lunch menu.

Instead on Shrove Tuesday we eat something we call "semla". These are large buns with the top cut off, part of the inside removed and replaced with almond paste, topped with whipped cream and the top replaced on top of the cream and lightly sprinkled with icing sugar. Ours are in the fridge waiting for our afternoon coffee.

Well we don't eat the pea soup...but yes it's also pancake day here ( Shrove Tuesday)...when we're expected to eat nothing but pancakes...

We have those cream buns here too.. but we eat them any old time....especially when they're calling to us in the bakers shop...

Yum (had those in Denmark)... have you mastered the art of eating them?

...???; and I was just thinking that its been a while since I made pancakes!
Mine are from scratch and are very thin (more like crepes) with crispy edges (Yum!) and full of holes to help hold the butter and syrup...
I use a gravy ladle to portion the batter into the pan.

I believe the question of "Whats for dinner?" has just been answered...

Enjoy!

Due to lockdown/social distancing, I missed having pancakes with my grandson yesterday. :( Every year on Shrove Tuesday he would come here for tea and watch while I made the batter then helped me cook them, always served with lemon and sugar. He said his mum and dad were rubbish at making them. ;) However, yesterday he decided to try and make some himself and succeeded. He even sent me a photo of a perfect pancake via text message.

Similar to Happy Joe, the pancakes we make are like crepes. Very light and thin.

That's so sweet Pam. I make mine thin too

I had no idea that Lent started today (it's Wednesday in OZ now). The whole idea of Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras is to prepare for the season of Lent; spiritually by confessing your sins and domestically by eating up all of the rich foods in the house in preparation to a season of fasting.

I'm non traditional so these things are not uppermost in my mind. I am wondering when my little church will be allowed to reopen for services. I miss the community that I am used to.

I haven't eaten pancakes in years. Lately, with the talk of them the past few days, I want some; crepes or fluffy it doesn't matter.

But I'm also in the mood for pizza! So I think I'll spend the pancake carbs on the pizza tonight and make pancakes next week.

BTW, has anyone here eaten a "Dutch Baby"? Horrible name, served with sugar and lemon I know I would like it.

Never ate one but is sounds dangerous. Pancakes are my specialty. I coordinate with the frying of the bacon so that I have plenty of grease for the pan. I like whole wheat mix with milk and extra eggs. All served with Irish butter and real maple syrup. I also fry them thin.
