Battling on again off again insomnia the day yesterday was 31 hours of no sleep yet with tons of energy. Finally fell asleep at near midnight and woke up at 7AM feeling very good. Plying it day to day.

Same here, extremely exhausted after 36 hours, but can't sleep: eyes burn, ornery have to cat nap but when i do go to sleep
i'll sleep for 14 hours.
Insomnia was difficult to deal with when i was employed, now, now just wait...mean as a snake, so darn irritable!!!

I had chronic insomnia until a few years ago. Probably the only reasons it's not a problem now is because I have no work schedule, nap whenever, and I take medications that tend to make me sleep better. But when the insomnia was full-swing, I had a crash day once or twice a month when I'd sleep 13 hours or more. The rest of the time, I slept around 4 hours a night. Often that was twice a night for a couple of hours at a time because I'd get up and do stuff instead of trying to go back to sleep.

I cherish my sleep, a few years ago during and after a prolonged medical treatment my sleep was trash- 3 or 4 hours and that was that, get to be a zombie for another day unless I happen to die first.
Meds I have tried:
Ambien-Put me right to sleep...four hours later I was on my own...mixed light sleep and wake periods.
Trazadone- An old antidepressant used off label as a sleep remedy. Worked OK, but spotty sleep after 4 hours.
Melatonin- Wouldn't 'make' me fall asleep, but helped somewhat.
Benadryl- Worked OK but created a weird grogginess with me...o_O
Cannibus gummie(Indica-only) I would get good sleep(6+ hours) until having to go to the bathroom.

I also have trouble sleeping - 3-4 nights/week. Usually because I'm hungry or my blood sugar is too low or too high.
What I found that helps is an ounce of a drink - usually Irish Cream with whiskey. I have to work up to an ounce since I rarely drink. I'm able to have 1/2 ounce of whiskey with 1/2 ounce of Irish cream without coughing & choking. That allows me to sleep 6-7 hours, which is pretty good for me.
In my opinion, a small amount of alcohol is safer than a prescription drug.

That's the route I'd take except I have liver problems....not due to alcohol but a severe injury that left my liver a sluggish lightweight.

That's me.
As a rule, I sleep good, anytime.
However, if I've OD'd on coffee, I'll counter in the late afternoon with a beer
(especially in summer)

I've knocked off caffeine because it started getting me wired, but....
I still sip a cold one from time to time in the afternoons.

Sleep comes easy

How long before bed? I am monitoring sleep with my Fitbit, which although not as sophisticated as medical grade equipment nevertheless is surprisingly accurate, with an algorithm using data collected and constructing sleep pattern readout.

I usually have a daily 5PM vodka+club soda w/lime, 3-4 oz vodka. I can 'see' the difference in my sleep patterns with the 3 to 4 oz vodka. REM and Deep sleep are adversely affected by an increase in alcohol intake. I've since started a cut back to 2 oz, may even cease alcohol use again, to step up my weight loss effort.

30-60 minutes before bed. Sometimes a couple of minutes before bed, but then I'll lie awake for awhile.

I only had chronic issues with insomnia as a teen. Once i learned to meditate only extreme situations, physical or emotional distress keep me up. Heck i even slept thru a few hours of my hard labor with daughter's birth in 1983. No drugs,Contractions were 10 minutes apart, i was vaguely aware but told myself to wake if they got down to 5 or my water broke.

Also i take after my Dad in that caffieme does not effect me like it does most (downside to that is it is useless to stay awake on a long drive.
