10 Afghan refugee families (and counting) in my city now

Sacramento local news announced that 10 families who have fled Afghanistan arrived here a couple nights ago. They need sponsors, housing, and essentials. More are expected in the coming weeks.

The US has a few gates available at the airfield in Kabul for evacuations. Americans and Afghans who assisted the US military in any way are supposed to go to one of those gates to get flights out of Afghanistan. Right now they're getting over 400 people per hour out, but they expect that number to double by this evening and increase in the coming days. So far, the Taliban is turning a blind eye.

After 20 years, why the sudden rush to vamoose, I wonder. Although, seems apparent we weren't prepared even if we'd stayed till the original departure date (9/11).

Our apartment manager sent someone around with a donation wagon. Michelle and I put 3 sets of dishes and some bath towels in it. We have a bunch more stuff (mostly from her old apartment) that we'll take over to a mission that's gonna distribute it to these families.

Well according to todays' news the Taliban have now stopped any flights out of Kabul..so it looks like more won't be coming...

This is the plane load that arrived earlier today in the English Midlands from Kabul

Is there any report that these people were screened for covid?

Up to now we have had many headlines and online chatter filled with objections towards political refugees from Central America. We read continual objections to them as carriers of contagion, as people who exhaust our resources, as people who take away our jobs, as causes of crime, as being welfare bums who get endless handouts from the government, and as parasites who refuse to fight their government but are dependent on ours.

I have yet to see any such objections to those Afghans. Let's see what happens next.

Central America was/is a covid hot-spot. Afghanistan isn't.

Afghanis can't voice their anti-Taliban sentiments without getting themselves and their families killed; families first....after the rapes.

Now , Please don't anyone jump on me, because of course our first instinct is to save these people where we can... ...but the practicality of this is..that our country has allowed the afghani people in without the need of a passport so they can get out fast ... this is one thing.. but now how many terorists are going to be amongst them, either Afghanis or using afghani aliases to get into the country without the need for a passport ? This is something which is bound to become a concern in the coming days

7,500 covid deaths in Afghanistan with 8,500 in Honduras

Evidently, it has not been the hot spot but bear in mind that people were confined in very close proximity for several weeks. Still, one wonders why there have been no calls for closing the border to them as it has been to Hondurans.

My understanding is that the UN has issued visas to Afghanis known to have aided allied military forces, including their spouses and children. Visas for interpreters are being delayed, for some reason.

That is a valid point and it's similar to observations made when disguised al-Qaeda operatives used refugee camps as outlets into the West.

Bottom line; the USA and UN are responsible for the people of Afghanistan who relied on us and worked with us.

It would be silly to assume the UN doesn't know who served in the Afghan Army alongside allied forces.

There were also soldiers who fought with warlords from various tribal groupings. They were not Afghan army regulars. Very doubtful that the UN has any records on them.

But the point is that possible operatives may be using the refugee inflow as a means of entering our shores. Not saying it's actually happening. Only that there is that possibility as with al-Qaeda.
Ok, No one is getting a flight unless the UN has issued them a special visa/passport. The US military is also checking for those visas.

From a couple days ago - Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas is to take thousands of the refugees.

In a press conference on Monday, the Pentagon said it was clearing up to 22,000 spaces at a military base in El Paso to house incoming refugees.

That was published a few days ago, so chances are a lot of them have arrived.

Thanks for the post, Bonnie.
