Do you think this is what you would do.?

I read an article last night and I'm still wondering. The article said Oprah Winfrey paid 90 million dollars for her house. It made me think that there were so many good ways to use that money. Imagine how much good donating that money to so many organizations could help poor people out or companies doing research to cure a disease. At her age, I would rather downsize and be remembered as a person caring about others.

I’m mostly indifferent re Oprah since I rarely watched her show. She has many homes and has the money to buy them. She’s a serious donor to charities. Many people give her things that she doesn’t use. Read an article displaying everything she was selling on behalf a charity. She’s generous and has the right to live in a style she wants. She‘s only 67. JMO.

I don't think her spending is an indication of not caring about others.
She probably donates millions to charity & most of us are not aware of it.
And, simply having a lot of money doesn't automatically make someone greedy.

From what I read, Oprah established the Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation years ago that has given millions of dollars to various charities and non-profit organizations. She is ranked as the number one African American philantropist in American history. Most of her donations concern education, women, children and families. The woman is a self made multi-billionaire. I expect she has given away much more than what the house she lives in is worth.

She no doubt has to pay a large staff to take care of her $90 million house plus a staff of accountants to keep track of her and her staff. Then there's all that effort she has to put forth to be Oprah. If she likes all that crap fine. I'm just glad it's her problem and not mine.

It doesn't matter to me what she or anyone for that matter does with their money. They earned it. I'd like to think if I earned a large amount of money, I'd be more like Betty White. Supporting animals worldwide. She said that is why she had to keep working to support all the animal foundations she is involved in.

Oprah ranks among the 50 most generous Americans. $80 million to her Angel network of Charities, $11 million to Katrina victims, and $400 million for education. If she wants a $90 million dollar house she deserves it.

Personally, I wouldn't want a house too big to care for myself, so that would mean something about 2000 sq ft.
I don't see how rich people can stand to have strangers milling around in their homes.

I would like to move to a small house with a stream running through the property where I could have a horse or two and room for as many rescue animals that I could handle and I would hire help for that as well.
Maintaining the barns, and keeping the animals happy and healthy would be money well spent and very rewarding for me.
No personal maids . I couldn't stand people fussing around my "stuff".
Not that it would matter, I'd probably spend all my time in the barns anyway.

I am a big fan of Oprah's and always enjoyed her shows. I didn't know about all her donating to charities. I'm happy you shared that with us.

I was completely wrong about Oprah and I apologize for what I said about her, I just read this article, She is very generous with others.

In 2006 she earned an estimated $260 million in salary from her various interests including syndication, cable television, and print magazines. That same year she gave $58,300,000 to charity to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy, Oprah's Angel Network, and other groups.

WOW! I had to read this post 4 times. I thought I was hallucinating.
Someone actually admitted they were wrong!
On this forum!! Today!!
There's hope for the human race. (y)

People are able to become multi-billionaires while our country drowns in debt. We're rapidly approaching 30 trillion dollars in debt, we're in the midst of a debt ceiling crisis, although it appears that disaster has been narrowly averted with a short term patch that just kicks the can down the road so we can have another crisis in a few months.

Wealthy people like Oprah didn't need a tax cut, but they got one anyway a few years ago. WTF? How is that good for our country?

Yes, I knew Oprah was extremely generous with her wealth to those in need, she's a special lady. Like you, I'm just seeing more of the details of how much money went where, but I knew she was an angel to many. Personally, I like a more simple and natural life, but I might change if I were super rich like Oprah.

This would be my dream also.
