Pain Control

I have extreme pain in my feet and legs from arthritis in my spine complicated by two doctors maiming my feet 7 years ago. I use Tylenol and Codeine to try and control the pain. My best control mechanism is to play computer games and get totally involved in them. I am 86. What do you folks use for pain control? Sharing pain control methods may help all of us.

I don't use anything most of the time. When it gets to be too much, I take a Tylenol — which might be once a week. Otherwise, I often use a magnesium rollon, which takes the pain away ASAP.
(Hint to self: take more magnesium!)

I use Advil sometimes but it upsets my stomach. I use different strains of Medical Marijuana and it helps significantly in that it relaxes most of my body, and has significant pain relief. It is still controversial in the scientific community and public. CBD is in many grocery stores, and they are combining it with other foods and drinks. It has helped with seizures/Epilepsy, and Autism.
I am 69 so I can't even imagine being 86. Maybe even heat as in warm showers or baths, or heating pads. Opiods also give me constipation so I can't take codeine or the other forms. Massage might help too.

I have a bit of hip/leg arthritis, and have added a couple of Glucosamine Chondriotin with MSM pills to my morning vitamin routine. They seem to help. I also keep a small bottle of Naproxen Sodium...generic Aleve....in the cabinet, and take one of those if I'm planning on doing any serious physical work. I've been living with this for several years, and so far, it is manageable. The longer I can go without any surgery, etc., the better.

Same. I've been fighting a really bad cough, once I get started I cough till I'm retching and last month I coughed till I broke a rib.

I found that going to my favorite Hearts board and concentrating on a game is the very best thing to settle me down. Mind over matter can be pretty amazing.

This is what my Dr gave me to rub on my knee where I had a partial replacement in 2003. She thinks I have a meniscus tear but till she can find an MRI or CT scanner that can take pictures with metal in my knee this is what she gave me.

I also stage 3 CKD so I can't use Iproibuferan This has a small amount but not enough to bother my kidneys if I use disposable gloves to rub it in with, so it's not on my hand.

This is the RX version. You can also get it from Drugstores under Voltaren Arthritis Pain Gel It works great for me. Dr found out it was cheaper to get it with an RX than at amazon or O.T.C.

I use cold packs , and heat pads , mainly, and changes of positioning and cushions, etc....
Plus I utilize as much mental distraction as I possibly can, like you mentioned doing.
I also try to be sure to meet basic body needs, such as needed nutrients, water, etc... to try to keep any preventable problems at bay, so they don't make pain worse as they often can.

I take Tylenol if it is really bad but I try not to take it. My pain is mostly in my knees and legs so if I am sitting down with my feet up it usually goes away. I either read or color in an adult coloring book while watching television or listening to music.

The worst pain I ever experienced happened when I didn't take my pain meds after I had a regular c-section. I was in the hospital and it was the day after the C-section. I sure regretted that, but at the time I unwisely thought I could handle it. Of course, that was back in my "strong, like bull" days. That was a bunch of BS I was telling myself.

PS For those who don't know (as I didn't) an emergency c-section is a lot different than a "regular" one.

All my surgeons & Drs tell me to make sure I keep taking my pain meds BEFORE the pain starts. Once it starts it's almost impossible to get it to stop without medical intervention.

Like WheatenLover I thought I could handle it. Wrong. I let the pain get ahead of me & I had to go to Dr, to get an IV with some power pain meds shot in.

That's what my docs told me, too.

My husband has been in pain for most of the time since his stroke 9yrs Ago ,
Down his left paralysed side ....
He’s had most painkillers with the last 2 being co codeine 30mg and pregabalin accord, but he’s still in pain .....🥺

I take 1,000 mg Tylenol at breakfast and another 1,000 Tylenol at dinner (I do not eat lunch). Then I take 2 Acetaminophen (Tylenol)/Codeine at 11 PM or whenever I go to bed for the night. I also play computer games and get intensely involved to distract myself. Pain has been reduced now to a tolerable level.
