Problems Getting Old

I'm 86 and notice I now have lots of physical problems. My doctor diagnosed me with arthritis of the spine. When walking outside, I almost fell yesterday and today. From now on I will have to take my walks inside the house and have each walk be a shorter distance. I have trouble moving both arms and both legs. However, I'm still getting by. I'm able to still post here and walk. I don't need a wheel chair yet.

You might ask your doctor to refer you to physical therapy for some exercises

Sorry that you're going through this! My mom is 87 and prefers her home because everything is close by and she can lean against something or touch the wall to balance herself. Her knees are shot. When she visits my sister's house which is much bigger, she needs a walker to get around or else she loses her balance. The older we get, the more frail we are. Stay strong!

...it all depends on the person, whether they've looked after their body, or whether they've not suffered other ailments previously.... For example we have several posters here who are older than Mitch, and altho' not without some age issues, don't have the same amount of issues or as severe as Mitch...

I wish you better health Mitch... and less pain...

I'm also 86. I have bone on bone in my spine. I went to a spine Dr. that found this & then gave me a pill to take 3 times a day to get rid of the pain. It takes it from 10 down to 1 or 2 pain levels. I was doing great till I hit the 80-year bracket, then everything in my body either leaks makes noises, or I need to see another Dr. for other problems.

I'm using a 4 wheeled walker since I need a knee replacement. I also have one of the neckless that will call my DIL next door if I happen to fall. So far never needed it as the walker sure helps me get around in the house.

Holly,
My Drs. tells me this is the punishment for all the stupid things & did as a kid & into my '30s. This is the way I want to leave this earth.

One lesson I've learned is 'don't lean'. Sit up straight. Stand up straight. Put equal weight on both feet when standing. Growing up, our elders kept telling us to stand up straight.....turns out they knew what they were talking about. Cuts down on a lot of aches and pains.

The trouble with physical therapies is ....... when one gets into the advanced stages of limted physical ability , you simply don't feel like doing it, and it [is] [can be] painful to even try.

I think we slowly just give into the imobility & the pain. Which means we move less. Probably wrong but ..... who the heck wants to do [on purpose] what they know is going to hurt like hell.

It also depends on heredity as in the case of a friend who was born with rheumatoid arthritis (it ran in the family).

yes some of it does, that's true.... but I think if you've got to your 80's before you're having serious trouble, it's probably not hereditary
Perhaps not hereditary but just getting old; the human body evolved to only be in peak condition for a certain number of years and if your body has passed its peak, all that exercise, etc. can only forestall the aches and pains so long; if you live long enough, you're going to hurt, no getting around that; evolution rules.

yes I said that earlier in the thread..but I also said that there are some members here older than Mitch who don't suffer as much... I have no doubt that there are some members who are younger who suffer as much if not more...

I personally have problems , Osteoarthritis in my hands, several herniated discs, bone on bone in my spine, problems with one knee , which is so painful sometimes it makes me weep...... and a few other painful maladies... , I;m only in my mid-60's... none of it is hereditary, and I've always been a very active person..perhaps I just wore my body out..., buut I try and do as much as I possibly can because I fear being in the type of pain that Mitch is in, by the time I get to my 70's or 80's..

I'm 74, and notice that my balance isn't what it used to be. Take care @Mitch86
I am 79 and my balance is not what it used to be either. I have some trouble with my yoga, and I have given up going up on our sloped roof to work anymore. One of my 71-year-old neighbors fell off his roof a couple of years ago and he is still not quite right.

Those look like excellent movements I have never seen before.
Take a fast 2.5 to 3.5 mile walk every day that includes a few hills, but I tend to neglect some of the other exercises that I need to do. I stopped going to a regular gym several years ago because of prostate cancer and then COVID and I know that I need to get back into a better all-around workout program.

By the way, my suffering is only at times. It is not the same all the time. When I sit here at my PC typing, I have no pain. When I play games like chess and Civilization VI, I have no pain. When I sleep I have no pain. The pain comes very bad at times during the day when I stand in the bathroom and even then not all the time. Thus, I live for the good time sand try to ignore the level 10 times. In the end I am confident that all of us totally cease to suffer and have pain when blessed death ends it all. We all die in time.
