Whoopi Goldberg Suspended From ‘The View’ for Holocaust Remarks

"The View" has other trashy guests. You may recall Kelly Osborne's appearance:

On 4 August 2015, while appearing as a guest co-host on The View, Osbourne caused controversy when she said: "If you kick every Latino out of this country, then who is going to be cleaning your toilet?" Her comments were in response to then-Republican Party presidential candidate Donald Trump's stance on illegal Mexican immigration.[53] Co-host Rosie Perez quickly interjected by stating: "There's more jobs than that in the country for Latinos, and Latinos are not the only people who clean toilets." Osbourne then attempted to explain herself by stating "I didn't mean it like that."

I remember that !

Oprah Winfrey too was guilty in the early days of her shows of many racial themed shows and one in particular comes to mind which I won't go into , which prompted me never to watch her again....

I've never watched The View, but if it's like any other talk show, I suppose virtually all the participants have said things they later regretted. I think the Jewish concentration camp atrocities have been well documented, and I can't imagine anyone downplaying those events. When I was in Europe, I visited the camp at Buchenwald, and it was pretty obvious that the Jews went through Hell at those places.
But people do all the time. People deny the Holocaust even occurred.

Please post a link showing she claimed to be Jewish. I researched and that never has been said. She did say her family was made up of all kinds of people. We all have different kinds of people in our distant families. Did not see either that she thought it would be cute to have a Jewish name. She is one of the most talented people having an Oscar, Tony, Emmy and a Grammy award.

IMO it would be better to discuss and understand Whoppi's comments than to publicly shame or punish her for having a different point of view.

IMO it's another example of the difficulty involved in having an honest discussion concerning feelings about race in America.

Why on earth would anybody put themselves out there?
well said

Careful of what you say? The self appointed politically correct police are everywhere and they are watching you. Maybe it's best not to say anything or maybe it's best to say what you are told to say. But then you just become a part of the flock of sheep out there. (Best is for you to think for yourself; but don't tell anyone I said this!)

I watched this segment and I actually agreed with her that the Holocaust was less about race and more about "man's inhumanity to man". Then I learned, just like she did, that the Jews were considered an inferior race to the Nazis. I never knew that. That is my ignorance, as it is hers. She apologized. Seems like Cancel Culture to suspend her for two weeks. Now we get Joy Behar hosting for two weeks? God forbid.
I wasn't following this, but I watched a clip of her speaking with Colbert about this. BTW, I always though of Jewish people as being described by religion, but like you I didn't link it what was actually said during the Holocaust. She said that if the KKK were coming down the block and she was walking with a Jewish friend, she would run because she was highly identified by her race, due to her skin color. That the friend, since her skin was white, would likely be passed by. Goldberg is not a racist or a Jew hater, but I guess the show had to take some action against what was said in order to have some closure for the audience.

It is amazing to me why some people in the public eye do not remember they said something or did an interview and it comes back to bite them in the rear.
I guess in light of the Neil young protests some VERY awful past words that would be " from misinformation" have been found and resurfaced as well ...... average folks often do not go on record with this to resurface on them .... but i guess social media has bitten a few in the backside.

It shows we really do NOT know this person only whom they appear to be ...... I find it funny / ironic that some get a pass for past comments saying they changed or said sorry and some do not .....

Never watched Whoopi on the View because I hate all talk shows. I've always admired her acting and was disappointed to read about her remarks.

As far as the Nazis considering the Jews to be inferior, I don't think that's the case. Just the opposite. They hated that Jews were so successful. Jews were the bankers and professors and business owners, which made the Nazis feel inferior. THAT is why the Nazis wanted to eliminate them.
That's partially true. Hitler did indeed have a giant green chip on his shoulder for Jews because so many successful businessmen were Jewish, but he also thought they were inferior to Germans/Aryans and therefore didn't deserve success. Because they were lowly Jews, he was convinced their success was ill-gotten, that they were crooked businessmen and downright thieves. When he became chancellor, he used propaganda to convince his fellow Germans that all Jews were ruthless crooks, and subhuman to boot, and that "real" Germans could only prosper (deservedly, because Germans are "superior") by getting rid of them.

Same for all Romani people ("Gypsies"), Asians, and Blacks.

Agreed, your 2nd sentence in particular.
It's not like she denied the Holocaust. She condemned it. Just had a different view of the motivations.

While it is true Jewish people were the initial and primary target, The fact that some 5 million non-Jews also died in the camps suggests Hitler & the Nazis were trying to get rid of anyone they disapproved of--Romany (Gypsies), homosexuals, disabled people of various kinds and of course anyone who spoke out or actively tried to oppose the Nazi agenda.

It all cane out wrong for Whoopi. If she tries to correct anything now, it will look like a cover up.

She is right about the Holocaust not being about race – but – she is thinking of today’s standards not what Hitler thought.

Hitler and the National Socialists (Nazis) believed that people could be divided into races. And they believed that the races were in competition with each other. The ideas of Hitler and the Nazis were racist. After the Second World War, science showed that the classification of humanity into different races is wrong. There is only one race: the human race.

Jews are not a race, and categorising people according to race is wrong and dangerous. Even so, some people still believe in the concept.

(This taken from a writing from Anne Frank House).

Whoopi said in the past she felt Jewish, she supported Jews and I think what was said should not define who she really is.
.

I like Joy Behar. Ok, not as much as Whoopi. I saw her say those remarks and was surprised how she double downed to her strange notion. Glad this came up. Whoopi's no crybaby. She can take it.
I loved Joy Behar as a comedian. Not so much on The View but to each his/her own.

Last Thursday was Holocaust Remembrance Day — a day that most people, I would guess, didn't give a second thought. Or a first thought. It's been 77 years since Auschwitz was liberated by the Red Army. Some six million Jews perished in Nazi death camps and by other means. While what Whoopie said was factually wrong, it did get people talking about the Holocaust, which is a good thing.

In a more perfect world, something like the Holocaust could never happen again. Technology is rapidly advancing, as is science, but humans are still as despicable as ever. Just this past weekend in Orlando, neo-Nazis staged protests on the street and on an overpass where they gave Heil Hitler salutes and waved swastika flags. They shouted antisemetic slurs at passersby who looked Jewish and got into a fight with one in the middle of an intersection.

That said, I have never watched The View and in all likelihood, I never will. That kind of thing doesn't appeal to me, but if other people like it, go for it!

It will be interesting to know if viewer numbers went up or if they will when Whoopi returns in a couple of weeks.

"They shouted antisemetic slurs at passersby who looked Jewish"
I wonder how they could tell; unless they were orthodox & looked like this.

But didn't we learn what the actual races are in high school? No one ever called Jewish people a race. It's just what I was taught. They have been known as an ethnicity just like many are. I am Slovak but that's not a "race". It's an ethnic group. I don't know, now I'm confused 🤔.
I agree. I have never (and still don't) consider Jews to be a race. Ashkenazi Jews, however, are without doubt the most intelligent of all ethnic groups, a trait that is almost certainly genetic, and ironically believed by many to be a product of Antisemitism in medieval Europe.

Whoopi is worth $60 Million. Celebrities, especially the most popular/wealthy, effect more people because of their fame and fortune ( fortunate ). I take that into account when hearing what they say or do. The way they view our world is different than the masses. I know a few millionaires and their view is quite different than mine. They have a "smugness" and "surety" that the rest of the people I have known who are struggling with their lives. They have many advantages that the masses don't. Imagine a TV show where there are 5 middle aged people who make $60K a year. Would we be interested in their "VIEW"?

Oh my, they suspend or fire people all the time for just maybe not understanding the impact of what they said. I don't know what this doggone world is coming to when you cannot speak your mind without being afraid someone is going to take your job. Stop this planet--I want off!

im coming with you Ruth ….lol…
