Racism 2.0

I have wondered that too. It is supposed to be to keep statistics to show discrimination, or not, but I am skeptical. On a lot of things you can refuse to answer, which I often do.

The strange one is Hispanic, so hard to define. Under some government rules I can qualify as Hispanic based on my having ancestors who lived in Florida when it was still Spanish. Now the family names were Irish and English, and I doubt those folks could speak a word of Spanish, and probably did not consider themselves subject to the Spanish Crown. But I am still legally able to claim it... Never have, but I often considered it. Not that I wouldn't be proud to have Hispanic ancestry, I just don't.
My son-in-law was a San Francisco police officer. Having an Hispanic last name was a key to promotion. A fellow officer was qualified in that respect and got a promotion. It was somewhat of a joke in the department because his name was entirely European -- not a drop of south of the border blood.

I have been retired for quite awhile -- quite, but the corporation I worked for was very anxious to get its hands on minority new hires, especially Black. That was a universal desire in the business. We also had mandatory week long tolerance classes. I will never forget one. First day we watched a video. In the video a Black family wanted our help with a large inheritance. Only requirement, the officer in charge of the account had to be Black, or they would go elsewhere. This was presented as a lesson demonstrating the importance of having Black employees. OK, but I raised my hand and asked the instructor -- what if the family was White and demanded a White officer? Oh my, how to answer that! She almost had a nervous breakdown. We got a new instructor the next day and I kept my mouth shut -- well pretty much. (-8

Racism where everybody tries to be first.

This seems to be a topic that is as controversial as politics, since one of my threads was shut down due to controversial remarks. I just want to bring this to light once again.

My partner of 30 years is Filipino. He is a handsome guy but because he is Brown he has had to endure racism all of his life. We were discussing it today and he told me that he has always been careful to walk at a distance behind White women for fear they will be afraid that he has bad intentions. I had never heard this before and I was appalled. Even after 30 years, I am still learning about racism.

I said in my post that was closed that I would be glad to give up some of my White Privilege to bring balance into our society and I will say it again. There will be some who disagree with me but that is their prerogative.

As the final commentator says at the end of the video --- we need to cleanse society of the disease {of racism}. That is why we must NOT engage in foreign wars or other international matters. SOLVE ALL OF OUR PROBLEMS FIRST. Then and only then do we involve ourselves with these other matters.

Discrimination is overrated. In the end it's brains and hard work that win the day, but especially brains. Chinese were brought to California as low end laborers. When it came time to build the Western end of the Intercontinental railroad all the Irishmen were fighting in the civil war, so no choice but those lazy stupid Chinese. Big surprise! Those Chinese beat the Irish, setting records laying track and digging tunnels. When my recently deceased Chinese friend, former co-worker, and daughter of a shop keeper, was a newly married girl she and her Chinese husband set out to buy a house, but developers wouldn't sell to Chinese, the only exception being Joseph Eichler, but too far out of the city. When I worked with her she was a property owner, had one of the biggest accounts in the firm, and was the envy of her department. Before she died she gave (not loaned) her MD niece $200,000 to pay for her advanced education in cardiology.

Today Asians outnumber Whites in UC Berkeley, and many other universities on the West Coast. Median US Asian family income exceeds that of Whites, and the most advanced Silicon chip manufacturing facility in the World isn't in Silicon Valley, it's in Taiwan. Oh, and I drive a Korean car, and before that, Japanese. Brains and hard work, but especially brains. Darwin understood that. BTW -- I'm English Irish. (-8
Not sure where you are coming from. My partner has always excelled at anything he has tried. He successfully managed a retail store with 15 employees. In his current position, he has no desire to become a manager but has still been asked whether he would be willing to manage the store.

That still doesn't address the fact that he has had to walk behind White women to make them feel less intimidated. So what is your point, since you seem to be the expert on discrimination?

But, why, why, why do job applications, or applications in general, ask for race, gender, age. marriage status?
Has nothing to do with ability.....nothing
They couldn’t even ask these questions twenty-five years ago. It was 45 years ago that a woman I know was asked if she had planned to have kids. She set them straight and as I recall she was hired because they really had no choice; her qualifications exceeded everyone else and they knew there’d be issues if they didn’t. Not many landed on their feet like she did.

it is truly sad that we can't all get along. I get acupuncture. My acupuncturist is Filipino. After meeting her, my wife and I have gone to a couple of Filipino restaurants and grocery stores. Always enjoyed those experiences. Always enjoyed meeting and interacting with Filipino folks. We are all just people. Labels mean nothing. Just a way to separate us.

I LOVE this story. Just wonderful. African-American man, a keyboard player for Chuck Berry, was playing in a club and approached by a white man. The white man just loved, loved his music. They sat down and shared a drink. When Daryl was playing in the club again, that man came to see him. That happened several times. They became friends. Eventually, the white man admitted to Daryl that he was in the Klan. Daryl's father had actually been in the diplomatic services. Instead of becoming offended or frightened, Daryl decided to just continue his friendship with the man.

And that led Daryl to slowly start converting Klan members, just out of simple human friendship.

And yes, he was so well liked that he even started attending Klan events and becoming friendly with Klan members. To date, he has convinced about 300 members of the Klan to leave the group...

Yes, Devi, it is quite amazing. The first time I heard about him, I thought it was a fictional story or something.

In the 80s I was married to an African American man. We had a good relationship for quite some time before he passed away.

Anyway, a few weeks after we met we were taking a nice Sunday ride and we were subsequently pulled over by the police. They had us both get out of his truck and searched him and dumped my purse out, rifled through it, then searched me. We had to wait while they ran out driver's licences. Then after that they told us they were looking for a black and white couple who had committed some crimes.

The part I didn't know until we got home was that the cop who got my husband out of the truck had shoved a gun into his side. He told me that later.

I've known and worked with several Filipinos and spent a lot of time in the Philippines. A family member is half Filipino. Never heard a story like the one you describe, but a Filipino woman who worked for me was very vocal about her dislike of the Philippines and her love of California. Perhaps your partner is being mistaken for a Latino? An Hispanic neighbor of pure Mexican blood is a very good friend, and no one to fear, but California does have a Latino gang problem, as does Texas ...

"With as many as 100,000 gang members operating in Texas and multiple cartels using the border as smuggling points, the Lone Star State has no shortage of gang-related violence and drug trafficking."

Many white and other colors women are victims of sexual assault and other abuses. Some fear leaving their house to go out, having a relationship and life itself.

So it seems your partner is a victim of racism and women are victims, too. It's a sad state of affairs for all concerned.

That seems a fair enough question to me. I see nothing wrong with those sorts of questions.

Texas has one of the largest Filipino populations in the US. I have tried my best to understand your partner's claim. Honestly, I do not understand that and have never heard such a claim made before.

Racism is everywhere even among people of the same race.! To enlighten the young is maybe the key. Teach them from kindergarten, teach their parents even more.

The most we can hope for, is for law and order forces to treat everyone fairly. It will take maybe another generation or two before racism is even starting to lose some ground in the US . It does not help when people go on the defensive every time something seems even the least racist to them.

You know the old saying, yell fire! fire! too many times, and you get ignored. Leave people to sort out the race thing themselves, family by family.

Yes, racism is not only in the USA but everywhere unfortunately. It takes education, patience and the willingness to learn new ways to be.

That seems a fair enough question to me. I see nothing wrong with those sorts of questions.
The question that bothered me in that example was the customer's demand for an officer of a specific race -- a racist question in the first place. The customer's request should have been for ability, NOT race. That should have been the lesson. What we often forget is that racism can rear it's ugly head in any race.

Knowing how cops operate, they probably made that story up as an excuse to harass you. That's the way cops are. Yes I realize it is not fashionable nor politically correct to say so but it is the truth.
