Russia attacks Ukraine as Putin warns US, NATO of ‘consequences you have never seen’

Putin is now showing himself to be completely Mentally ill... after his statement today

Vladimir Putin has today branded Ukrainians 'extreme gangsters', claimed their army is using civilians as 'human shields', hailed his soldiers as heroes who are fighting to save innocent lives and said his invasion is going exactly to plan and schedule in a stunning act of hypocrisy and outright denial.

The Russian leader, who eight days ago declared all-out war against Ukraine in a bid to topple its elected government and reunify it with Russia by force, denied that his troops are deliberately targeting civilians - despite reams of evidence to the contrary - and instead blamed 'neo-Nazis' holding citizens hostage.

Referring to the invasion as a 'special operation' aimed only at protecting the eastern Donbass region, he acknowledged that some Russian forces including a senior commander had died in the fighting - but claimed the officer had blown himself up in a heroic act of sacrifice while taking out several Ukrainian soldiers.

The address, one of the first Putin has made in public since announcing the start of his 'special operation' eight days ago - will do little to reassure anyone that the war is close to being over, or that Russia can be brought to the negotiating table without more blood being shed.

But it also hints that Putin is rattled as the fighting proves harder than Russian commanders anticipated, and western sanctions go harder and deeper than even European or American observers predicted. All hope of a swift victory has now been dashed, leaving Putin facing a long, bloody and expensive war to achieve his aims.

Meanwhile the Russian economy is tanking with the ruble at record lows, the stock market unable to open because it faces near-total collapse, and European countries seizing assets from billionaire oligarchs. Protests have also sprung up in Russia, coupled with high-profile political figures and celebrities calling for the war to end.

Putin perceives the leadership Of the U.S. as very weak and is taking full advantage of it. This could be seen by some as a smart move on his part as far as timing. Others may follow his lead. IMO the world is being run by a bunch of......

He has lost the plot!
At first, I thought he started this war because Ukraine was going to join NATO thus his border would be
somewhat compromised, now after 2 failed peace talks, I am convinced he has lost it.

You don't know what Teddy R. would do @Gaer and no, I won't "Forget possible nuclear threats!" I live in NYC, where my grandson lives; I don't live down in the boondocks where no one cares about the inhabitants.

The only good thing thus far is NATO. Just make sure it doesn't have an enemy like it did a short while ago.

I agree with you, this is beyond politics. It's our world.

Well, I'm just saying my personal opinion. I don't base decisions on fear. I probably should not have expressed my opinion because i will make a lot of enemies, but that's how I feel.
OF COURSE I don't want you or your family to die but the nuclear threat IMO, would not happen yet. (not for several years)
@Pepper,We agree on many, many things and I have no desire to offend you, but these people are humans who need help!
I agree it's a tightrope!
Since you are bringing in others to stand behind your opinion, I'll step back and erase my post!

I decided to reprint your post just in case you do something silly like delete it!

No matter what, Putin has to lose this war big time, trust me when I say China is watching very carefully for the world's reaction to this.
Of course as everyone is aware and concerned about... China's designs of absorbing Taiwan...I believe China will put that action on 'hold' for a bit...for now.

I'm afraid that given the fast escalation of the attack on Ukraine, a potential nuclear war if it were to be so.. would not be''years away''... IMO... horrible prospect as it is.. and this has further been compounded for me today by Russia's foreign minister calling the USA the equivalent of Nazi Germany... ..I honestly went cross-eyed when I read it, it took me totally by surprise. I was thinking ''where the H did that come from ""?.. why the USA, when up to now it's been all about Ukraine, and with vague threats to Sweden and Finland.. but now talk of Nuclear war on the USA.. what the actual H....

( I did post the whole thing on another thread)

ETA..here it is , post 187.... https://www.seniorforums.com/thread...invasion-of-ukraine.68716/page-8#post-2030341

That was certainly true regarding the previous administration, but Putin is an excellent "player" and seizes an opportunity when it presents itself.
Factors in play:
The financial fallout from the pandemic- shortage of goods, and the resultant inflation
America's 20 year long failure in Afghanistan
Divisiveness in American society

Wonder if this is setting the stage for martial law? A lot of Western outlets are reporting that many Russians who are able are fleeing this week based on rumored implementation of martial law.

@hollydolly
I have an opinion on your post #40, but it is political so let's just say Putin lives for mayhem & division and other fun stuff.
that's the problem here, because altho' admin is allowing us to discuss this current situation, we do still have to be careful not to get embroiled in '' the politics''.....and so I too would like to say more, but of course respect the rules of the forum at the same time

Poland has so far refused to send their Russian made MIGS to Ukraine. It's just been announced that the US is discussing resupplying Poland with US fighter planes so they will send theirs. I agree with the plan, but it ups the ante.

Waiting for Putin's next round of 'consequences' threats and hope that he sticks to just making threats.
