Refraining from current events topics

Signe The Survivor

On Hiatus until unknown time
Since I began here approximately a month ago one of the main reasons I joined was when I read there was a zero politics policy on the site. I decided from the start to refrain from any of the Covid 19 threads and I stuck to that as well as any of the vaccination threads as well. I did however get involved in many of the current events topics brought up in the last month and honestly the chats have been great and I actually have acquired much from all of them. The problem though as being a History teacher my entire career, I love talking about this stuff and find myself talking about this with my son quite often and also some of my friends here at home. It is becoming the last thing I want to chat about when I come on here. I am not saying I have not enjoyed chatting with all of you over these topics, but I find myself talking about the same topics in many instances and many of these topics are quite overwhelming so they are not the easiest to discuss. So I have decided from this moment further that I will not be engaging in the current event topics.

I don't think there is anyone in this forum who doesn't understand. Although I participate in the Current Events topics, I personally prefer the Music and Entertainment threads. I see you are there as well.

I think you made a great decision. The current events in our world are depressing and divisive, and when they start weighing on me I will graciously bow out as well.

Do you mean the "Current News & Hot Topics"? Understandable. I do think that when a person posts in any topic, it is a current event for them, no matter what it is. :)
Yes, I mean the news and hot topics section. The General Discussion is fine and I suppose I will use my discretion on any thread whether I decide to become active or not.

🤷‍♀️# Me too!!!
Oh, get a life. Shero and Lavinia, you are both negative and pathetic. I have no time for either of you. Lavinia, you are just as negative as Shero. You both deserve each other. Maybe you should start a Coffee Klatch to discuss how many ways you are so superior to others on SF. It will be short conversation.

Amen I say.

Of course you are on the negative bandwagon. I wouldn't expect anything else.

Vous n'êtes que négatif et n'ajoutez rien à ce forum. ;)
You should not have said this. This is wrong to say. You are not speaking for me, AND..............who died and made you boss? IMO, you owe @Shero an apology for your UNgentlemanness.

Probably, Signe felt the need to inform us is due to the thread, missing members. If she isn't seen on a few hot topic threads, some might assume she's among the missing, so to forestall any pesumptive conclusions, she's headed that off. At least, that's how I perceived her statement.

..but Signe is not leaving the forum..just the current news section....

Wot's all this then?

I like everyone on this thread, particularly @dseag2, who is a favorite, but I did think it was kind of negative of him to call out a couple of very nice people for being negative.

Aren't we all a mixture of positive and negative? Even Mr. Rogers claimed to have had moments of irritation.

I was wanting to ask the same question Lavinia asked, because I was afraid my crankiness on a recent Hot Topic's thread was the cause. If so I want to apologize.

I understand, however I will miss your posts, I think you have added value.

I am a minor contributor to the current events topics, it is probably easier for me, not being a Historian, to step back from it.

Look forward to seeing you elsewhere.

Thank you Pepper…I greatly appreciate that.

Actually, I was also wondering who made deseag second in command…maybe he has to vet all posts before they are delivered?

I require no apology though, my life is too happy for negativity, however, might be a good idea for him to change his “signature” since he does seem to have an uncontrollable penchant for getting into every so called argument!!.

On the 22nd of November, 1963, the charismatic President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated. The shock reverberated around the world. The British Press went into overdrive, it became more of a media scrum than news reporting. For about a year or so I refrained from newspapers as well as TV & radio news reports. Slowly I started to keep abreast of the news again, then on the twenty first of October 1966, the Aberfan disaster which was the catastrophic collapse of a colliery spoil tip on, 21 October 1966. The tip had been created on a mountain slope above the Welsh village of Aberfan, near Merthyr Tydfil, and overlaid a natural spring. A period of heavy rain led to a build-up of water within the tip which caused it to suddenly slide downhill as a slurry, killing 116 children and 28 adults as it engulfed Pantglas Junior School and a row of houses.

The media sensationalised the awful event, even to the point of holding their own kangaroo court over blame. From that day on I gave up on the news.

Signe's comments have much empathy from me, unlike others, I do understand the need to tell, to explain why. Not going with the flow can often make you seem like some sort of pariah. For my part, having shared my view with others when I was much younger, I was all but pilloried for my abstinence of the news. Accused of being irresponsible was the milder insult. Being unfit to vote and worse, had me just staying quiet and I have been that way ever since.

That's not to say I am a quiet type, what it has taught me is that ignoring all the goading and taunts is a far better way of dealing with those who have some sort of agenda on how I should live my life.

First off I certainly did not see this thread turning into the charade it has turned into which I feel is quite ridiculous. Secondly, I posted this thread mostly and simply because I felt like it and since I post regularly on those topics and would no longer be doing so I wanted people to understand the reasoning behind it.
