All grocery stores closed?

So what would you do if you woke up in the morning and all the grocery stores were closed, out of food, water and essentials, and no idea when they would get in a new shipment? Not a test, not a contest, but have you ever wondered?
 

We have enough food and water on hand to get by for awhile. Believe it or not, we still have some very old freeze dried food left over from Y2k. We could easily ration what we had to make the best of it. Probably would start collecting some rain water in barrels, we have a small purifier pump to use if needed to get water from a questionable source.
 
We'd be OK for a few days. After that....dumpster diving....or cannibalism. (My nextdoor neighbor's wife looks mighty tasty and tender.)
Seriously, it's a tough call. Really depends upon what the situation is; move to a different area where the food is. I guess.
 

Have I ever wondered? Not really, I've never been part of the end of days crowd. We probably have enough food to last a month or so if we were careful with it, but we don't plan for that scenario, it's just what we keep from the garden and frozen. I don't hunt, but our property abuts a state prairie preserve and I'd have no problem hunting if we had to. My dad still keeps a few cattle so it wouldn't be a stretch to fill the freezer with meat that way either. I could also plow a large section of the property and increase the garden size, so we could live "off the grid" if needed.
 
I'm in the middle of reading Patriot - A Novel of Survival by James Wesley, Rawles (yes, that's how he writes his name) and while it appears he tries to be the next Tom Clancy I don't think he's even close, especially when he talks about survivors of an economic crash hauling around arms and legs in a shopping cart.

But a few of his other scenarios seem more believable ... like what happens when money loses its value due to hyperinflation, how people empty out all the grocery stores in a few days and how there will be survivors and, well ... non-survivors.
 
I have a blow up boat and lots of netting and I live near the ocean. I love fish enough to eat it every single day. Now if you throw in walkers, aka zombies, I'm not sure, I'd fare all that well.

people shared; their food, houses, water, and labour.
 
Never thought about it. Where I live hurricanes are the only reason we ever have everything closed for a few days. You get a heads up on those so you can prepare. I don't try to prepare for a nuclear bomb or something. I figure if that happens we are toast anyway.
 
A part of this some folks didn't think about. If the stores were closed, after about 3 to 4 days, all you would need is bullets and guns. Those that have anything would be over run with those coming to take it.

Hence, the need for MORE bullets and BIGGER guns ... ;)
 
I saw a man on TV demonstrate a survival technique for water. He tied plastic bags around some slim tree branches and in a few days was able to drink the water that collected in the bags!

LOL so much for animal love, eh? Stomach growls, holly goes to lake, bye bye Swans, ducks and anything else eatable.

LOL! Well, at least you have a plan, I got zip! Sure makes me wish I had a farm, but yet, if something like that happened those folks would have to be fending off invaders, scarey:(

That's true but I've always believed in hunting to feed yourself or family. It would be hard to shoot a living thing, but I would to survive.

That won't be happening to us, you have to think about those things, we'd be loaded and ready to protect ourselves and our property from vandals.

So I guess all a person really needs is propane and lots of BBQ brickettes, and a high wall around your house, and a moat?
