Dump the Pump Day encourages public transportation amid record gas prices

Now I live in Tennesee. Did live in Michigan.
Thursday is National Dump the Pump Day -- an occasion started 16 years ago with the aim of urging American drivers to use public transportation. And with gas prices over $5 per gallon, it's taken on a special significance this year.

The observance was founded in 2006 by the American Public Transportation Association as a way to encourage commuters nationwide to dump the gas pump by leaving their cars at home and opting for buses or railways.

If everyone ..... would just stay home one day ...... no work, no play ....... park every gosoline powered vehicle [exception being emergency vehicles] for just 24 hours ....... freakin' gas prices would drop quicker than panties on prom night.
 
Now we have a double whammy. Prices are soaring and our climate crisis. Neither of which will be helped much by public transportation. There is a ten year lag in CO2 accumulation. We move closer to the wild wild west daily. Another shooting yesterday...2 killed one injured.

Sounds eerily familiar to “Stay home to flatten the curve.” Probably would work about as well.

Not familiar ? Or I forgot ?

IMO, a 24 hour period of no use, no purchase , of gasoline/diesel would send a message to both the oil companies & the fed ..... I believe prices would lower quickly, and they both just might reconsider what they do in the near future ....... as I said, just opinion.
 
I like your idea @rgp. I remember in the '70's our meat prices rose high, and one lone woman put forth the idea of 'meatless Mondays' and after a few weeks there was a big drop in prices. I ate pasta on Mondays I remember.

I wish your idea became a movement.

This is great idea and do able in many larger cities etc .......

i was recently looking at job sites and it was AMAZING to see jobs listed some quite well paying who had this in ads...In my area

1. "NOT on bus line.... will need a vehicle to apply"
2. "must have reliable transportation ....."
3. " public transportation is NOT considered reliable" ...
some lines are simply abandoned if staff is short or whatever ..... maybe u got to work .......how u get home may vary...

depending on a persons location... perhaps rural or off the basic decided lines ........ public transportation can be quite challenging ........

once was offered a position that I thought i would take public transportation .....
It would take walking or drive to park and ride 4 miles and transferring to 3 buses to reach place often with less then 5 minutes to make from one bus to another ....
commute would equal 1.5 hours before and after work using bus .....
38 minutes each way if i drove....
 
I'm enjoying taking the trains and buses here in Chicago (now that I've gotten better about finding them), but I think the public transportation in Chicago might be better than most American cities.

I wish we had extensive high-speed rail in the United States, preferably all with affordable option of having ones car on board also. I've read that airplanes are extremely polluting, so I'd think we could switch a lot of traffic from planes to trains if we had high-speed trains.

Oh yeah. Planes emit an enormous amount of pollution. This is why experimenting with electric planes have already begun. Having zero experience with electric planes, I would much prefer jet fuel. It takes a lot of thrust to put a 400,000 pound plane in the air. I don’t know how they will get enough electric to generate enough power to get that plane to 35,000 ft.

There isn't any public transportation where I live. Nothing. However, I group my errands so I only drive two times a week at the most.

Aviation fascinates me. Although I have flown (as a passenger) nearly 500,000 miles, I never tire of the rush of the take-off.

Me too. That was always my favorite part of the flight. When I made the turn off the taxiway and onto the runway and we were cleared for takeoff, we did what is known as a “turn and burn.” Make that 180 degree turn, push the accelerators all the way forward, release the brake and off we go until we reach V1 and then rotate the nose into the air. Oh, baby, what a thrill.
